EQ Leadership Tips from Napoleon Bonaparte

Finally defeated by the Russian winter, Napoleon's job was to motivate men to fight, and possibly die, under the worst of conditions. Did emotions belong on the battlefield? Do they belong in the workplace.

"It is as necessary for the heart to feel as for the body to be fed," Napoleon said, and he went right for it.

If we change the word "prince" to "leader" and change "nation" to "business," in his writings, we have the prescription for Primal Leadership.

1. Nothing goes well in a [business] system in which words are in contradiction to facts.

2. The allies we gain by victory will turn against us upon the bare whisper of our defeat.

3. A [Leader] is always wrong who speaks in anger.

4. None but indolent [Leaders] grow fat in their palaces.

5. Respect the people you deliver.

6. The best policy is simplicity and truth.

7. A [Leader] must speak to the eyes. It does well with the people.

8. In [business], there is a wide difference between promises and performance.

9. To conduct [business] both internally and to the public, deep thought, profound analysis, and the faculty of unwearied attention are necessary.

10. You cannot treat with all the world at once.

Calls to the emotional intelligence competencies of authenticity, focus, intentionality, good communication, respect and participation, self and other management, these are things to keep in mind when you address the troops. You do address the troops, don't you?

If so, when was the last time you challenged them to a higher calling? BEFORE the Battle of the Pyramids, July 2, 1797, Napoleon addressed his army with these words, "Soldiers, forty centuries are looking down upon you from these pyramids..."

Motivation, they say, is not a thinking word.
