Case A: X company has invested forty million dollars to create a new-to-the-world visionary machine. They estimate needing another five million to complete the project. However, X just learned that Y company has begun selling a product with broader capabilities and a much smaller price tag. How would you advise X?

Case B: Marcy has invested two years and several thousand dollars in her solo-preneur business. Now she realizes there is little demand for her product -- too little to bring her the income she needs. How would you advise Marcy?

Case C: Tony has almost completed his dissertation for an advanced degree. He's a few months away but he's ready to give up. "I'll probably never need this degree and I've lost interest," he says. How would you advise Tony?

Before continuing, I encourage you to stop and answer. What's important here is not your specific guidance, but a key principle.

Case A fits the straightforward cost "sunk costs" accounting model. In accounting theory, sunk costs are irrelevant. X should write off the losses and move on to a new project. Otherwise, they'd be throwing money down a well.

Case B resembles Case A: Marcy needs a new game plan. However, if she's a newbie business owner, she has gained a wealth of experience. She'll know how to avoid making the same mistake and her next venture will probably be a success. But her claim, "I've invested two years of my life!" doesn't enter the picture.

Case C seems different because Tony has something to gain either way. You never know when a graduate degree may come in handy. The act of finishing a big project can enhance Tony's self-image forever.

On the other hand, countless people abandon projects --novels, research, travel -- before a natural end. Some never look back. Many high school and college dropouts are happily running large corporations.

But even here, Tony's decision will be made on the basis of, "Which future will be brighter for me in a year? In five years? How will this decision impact my life and my self-concept?"

Bottom line: What you've invested so far will probably be irrelevant to your decision. Make your decision based on what you expect to gain in future years.
