It's All About Teamwork

When you get married it's all about teamwork. Both of you contribute by income(s) and/or household duties, accounting for the home budget and schedule. So if everything is equal, why does that change when you have a family?

Suddenly, you find yourself running the household and/or working and then "parenting on your own at times" while your spouse will state that he is doing his part to keep a roof over your heads. Why? Some say it comes from the way most men and women were bought up.

Most people from the baby boom generation and later were raised with stay at home moms while dads worked outside the home. While gender roles of the mid 20th century do not fit "today's dual bread winning" parents, many moms are finding that they are still expected to "do it all." Parenting demands require pulling together, dividing the load, and affirming one another often. Unfortunately that does not always happen.

If you can't get your spouse to do the share of parenting duties, at least consider these tips for you and your spouse:

• While you are on your way home, mentally file away the workday and bring your family into focus. Think about your spouse and your child. By the time you arrive home, you will be thinking about the important things happening in the lives of your family.

• Attitude can make or break almost any family situation. Don't get upset when things don't go your way or when a phone call takes away family time. Learn to compromise at times.

• Agree ahead of time to an evening schedule everyone approves of. Select a way that works best, whether it's a division of tasks, chores or "me" time.

• Show appreciation several times during an evening for your spouse's help. Being grateful keeps a positive attitude flowing and it also reflects in your children's attitudes as well.

• Don't forget to include the children as part of your family team! Give them daily tasks so they can feel they are contributing to the family. Tell them how much you appreciate their part in creating a family you're proud of.

Remember that TEAM work means, Together Everyone Achieves More! Something that our family reminds each other often everyday!
