A promise is a special thing. When we promise, we are giving our word that we will do something. Making a promise is a commitment. Breaking it says a lot about who we are and how little we can be counted on.
Most people are committed to keeping promises they make to other people. They wouldn't think of breaking a promise except when they make one to themselves. How many times have we promised ourselves we would exercise, lose weight, spend more time with the family, or go back to school only to break that promise? Why is it more important to keep a promise to someone else than to ourselves?
If you don't intend to keep promises to yourself don't make them. Each time you make a promise to yourself and don't keep it you chip away at your self-esteem. You send yourself a message that says, "I am not important enough to keep this promise to myself. I don't count." If you had a friend that continually made promises to you but never followed through would you continue to trust him?
By not keeping your own promises you break down the trust you have in yourself and your ability to do what you say.
You are the most important person in your life. How you treat yourself reflects in everything that you do and has an effect on how you treat other people. Keeping the promises you make to yourself is an important step in treating yourself with respect and creating a sense of well-being and high self-esteem.
If you don't plan on keeping your promises to yourself, fine, just don't make them. Be honest with yourself about what you will and will not do. Don't keep promising things to yourself that you know aren't going to happen at least for now. When you are ready to keep the promise make it.
Do not make that promise until you are ready to follow through. It is better to be honest with yourself about what you will and will not do rather than setting yourself up for failure.
What promises have you made to yourself that you have no intention of keeping? Be honest. Don't break the promise.
Simply tell yourself that you are not ready or willing at this time and let it go at that. When you are ready, revisit the promise and follow through. By being honest with yourself about what you are willing and ready to do, you set yourself up for success. Focus on what you are ready to do and revisit the promise at a time when you will be committed to keeping it.
