Selecting a Babysitter or Childcare Service

Are you rather new to parenting and are ready to entrust your child to the occasional or regular use of a babysitter or childcare service? Perhaps you too could benefit from using the Top Ten Method to help you pool your ideas and concerns and start attracting and selecting quality childcare.

See how gaining clarity on the following topics could help you make more effective decisions when it comes to hiring other key personnel for your home or business operation!

1. Likeability and Warmth Factor:

Is it important that YOU like the babysitter or caregiver? It is to me! My first impression really is lasting. If I meet a potential babysitter and I don't respond favorably, my child probably won't either.

Trust your gut on this one, please! Warmth, open-heart, good natured, gentle, sweet, patient, playful, responsive, and loving qualities do come through if they exist in the caregiver. Watch your child interact with the potential babysitter and see what you notice or pick up on. Read and respect your child's cues.

2. Role Model Potential:

What kind of person do you want your child to be around for several hours at a time (or per day)? What kind of role model would you like to offer your child?

Remember, most children will mimic much of what she or he sees and hears so understand this now and make your best choice. Maturity, groundedness, smarts, creative, playful, love of Nature, culturally aware and sensitive, and high standards and clear values rank high on my list. How about yours?!

3. Safety, Security, and Education:

Protecting, guarding, and guiding your child are key assets for a babysitter. Knowing child CPR, having childcare training and experience, and having common sense are highly desirable skills and traits. Does your babysitter know when a situation looks threatening or dangerous? Are they aware of their surroundings?

4. Special Needs:

Does your child need special attention, specialized care, or monitoring because of special needs? Make sure your future babysitter is aware and comfortable with this before you hire them.

5. Availability, Reliability, Consideration, and Flexibility:

As long as you request a babysitter's services with enough planning time, you need to be able to expect that they are available often enough to make it worth your while. You want to be able to expect that they will come through when they say they will.

If something comes up, however, it is natural that you expect that they give you as much notice as possible. If something comes up on your end, like a sick child, you want the babysitter to be able to handle a cancellation without much warning or resentment.

In all due respect, be considerate yourself and let them know as early as you can if you notice something developing with your child. Standby notice is sometimes required.

6. Level of Activity and Energy Desired:

How much energy and enthusiasm do you expect from your babysitter and child? Are you OK with your child watching TV or videos the whole time you are away or do you want your babysitter to interact with your child and stimulate them through games, brisk walks to the park, arts and crafts endeavors, or reading and other activities?

7. Proximity:

Are you prepared to pick up and drive the babysitter home? If so, you may wish to have a babysitter who lives within a few miles of your home, for example. Or is your schedule hectic enough and you really want someone who can travel independently to and from your home?

8. Financial Considerations:

Ask around to see what other people are spending for similar services and see what fits your budget and your needs. Have a clear idea of how much you are willing to spend or have a range in mind.

9. Discipline and Boundary Setting:

Be really clear on how and what you hope the babysitter can do in these areas. Ask them how they deal with challenging situations and see if this works for you. Are they able to communicate lovingly and yet firmly when a boundary needs to be set? Will they be able to handle it when your child does not follow directions or "behave"? Be firm yourself that you do not tolerate abusive behavior from your child or your child's babysitter.

10. Personal References:

Get two or three references in advance and call them! Ask if they were/are reliable, flexible, cheerful, not problematic, etc.
