Playpen Versus Playard
Which One Should You Buy?
by Rose SmithWhen selecting your baby furniture, one of the purchases you'll probably be considering is whether to buy a playpen or a playyard. What's the difference? Really ... nothing. Just the name. Some manufacturer's call them playpen's some call them playards. Both are basically the same type of baby furniture, designed to be a portable play and napping area, with a hard bottom surface covered with a padding on top. At one time, most playpens came built of wood, with wooden slat bars surrounding the playpen. Bulky and heavy, they usually just folded in half for storage. Over the last few decades, these playpens have changed in shape and size. Playard is the newest name for them, although it's basically still a playpen. The newer play pens are made of a lightweight, but strong, metal tubing covered in fabric and see-through mesh. These play yards fold easily, much like an umbrella for easy storage in most spaces. Whereas a typical playpen is usually square and fairly large, the new playards are rectangular in shape and many come with wheels, making it easy to roll them through doorways without collapsing them first. ** Additional Add-On Options For Playpens/ Playards ** Because of their compact, more rectangular size, the newer play pens/play yards have additional add-on features you can buy or that come already included. Here are a few of the options available: Bassinet Insert - You may want to look at the option of purchasing a playpen/playard that comes with a bassinet insert. The bassinet itself slips into one half of the playpen/playard and is secured along its railing. Some bassinet add-ons even come with their own free-standing frames, which allows you to set up the bassinet in a separate room. A pretty good deal for your money. Canopy Cover -- If you know you and you're baby may be outside alot, then buying a canopy cover or selecting a playpen/playard that comes with a canopy, would be a good idea. The outdoor canopy provides protection from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Canopys can either be full cover or only cover over half the playpen/playard. The choice is yours. Changing Table -- A feature you'll see a lot of now is removable portable changing tables that fit the top half of the playpen/playard. Very convenient when needed and most can hold babies up to 25 pounds. Weatherscreens -- Some playpens/playards also come equipped with roll-down weather screens which can be used to shield the sides of the playpen from the weather (or as additional sun protection). ** Things To Watch Out For ** Do keep in mind that playpens are not cribs and are not meant for long-term sleeping arrangements. Don't leave your baby alone and unattended while he or she is in the playard and be sure that it's set up securely before using. Make sure all legs are locked in place and if it has wheels, check that the wheels are also locked. Take your time when shopping for a playpen/playard. Some come with dozens of add-on options that you may or may not want. Be selective and decide what will serve your purposes and how much you are willing to spend on this particular baby product. Playard's are a very convenient item to have around and you'd be surprised how much use you'll get out of them.
