Become a Happy Person!!

Now that I've made up my mind to be a happy person, how do I get started ?

It's like doing the hokey pokey, you gotta put some of yourself into it.

Step # 1

Start the list.

What list you say ?

The list of things you like about yourself i.e. the characteristics that define you as a person i.e. I'm kind to others, I respect the rights of others, I'm honest, I'm truthful (well, most of the time). I try to be a good friend, plus all the other things that add up to a complete you.

Appearances don't count on this list. Do not include such nonsense as - I don't like my hair, it's too straight, my nose is too big, I hate my brown shoes etc.

Keep your list in your head and work on it from time to time. Pretty soon it will strike you that you like yourself. Hey !! son of a gun, I'm a nice person - I like me. No matter what else is going on in my life, I know I am pleased with the basic person. Sure, I worry too much or am afraid of too many things but those things are superficial and can be turned off. The important thing is, I like the basic me.

Self respect is absolutely essential for the trip to a happyplace but remember this, almost all self loathing is silly nonsense brought on by a society obsessed with appearances. Don't go there - take your measure from your list.

Step # 2

Start the process of letting go.

Letting go of what ?

Two things - hurts and guilt.

I know that in my lifetime I have hurt others but I can say, with a very clear conscience, that I never hurt anybody on purpose. It was always unintended - sometimes accidential and sometimes stupid but never vicious. And I'm not alone. Most people would say the same thing. The point is, hurts are usually only a misunderstanding of intention and as such should just be passed over and forgotten. Holding onto them is senseless. It won't change anything and only makes us unhappy.

Start right now - pick at least one old hurt and imagine yourself putting that hurt into a dark room way in the back of your memory and close the door. Once you have all your old hurts in that back room - imagine a huge padlock - put it on and throw the key away. Ah, freedom - how sweet it is.

Next on the adgenda is guilt. We must forgive ourselves for our mistakes. Sometimes it is important to ask those we offended to forgive us. A mature mind seeks forgiveness - it only takes a pea brain to wallow in regrets. Regrets fix nothing.

For thousands of years, nations have known that peace between two countries cannot begin until there is a general amnesty. A general forgiveness of all transgressions. So, be kind, forgive yourself, none of us are perfect.

Here is a holiday suggestion. Sit your family down and discuss a family amnesty. All old hurts (little ones and big ones) are forgiven and forgotten. Do the same with good friends. Peace and love will blossom.

If you have read this far and have made a start on your list of things you like about yourself and you are starting to "let go" i.e. you've decided which old hurt to lock up in that back room - then, by golly, you are definitely on the road to happiness.

Here is a little jog to get started. Which of these are true about you. I'm kind, I'm thoughtful, I'm understanding, I'm good natured, I'm easy to get along with, I'm honest - what else ?
