Lessons for Thinking Outside the Box

These vignettes are based on my observations of my two-year old toddler at play with me.

When Delphine was born, I told everyone that my teacher had arrived and she was less than 21 inches long! Truly, although she's almost 36 inches long, she teaches me something every moment of every day. And for this recovering workaholic and new mom in her 40's, learning how to play can be challenging and worthwhile.

So, here are some suggestions of how to create an atmosphere of play in your home and work.

1. Watch a video repeatedly until saturated.

My toddler's favorite until a month ago, was "Monsters, Inc." Thank goodness there are tons of nuances to pick up on with each viewing. Now she's into "Dance with Teletubbies". And she does dance with them!

Lesson to parent/caregiver: This, too, shall pass. When? Your guess is as good as mine. Don't get hung up on that question in the first place. Let it go!

2. Play a particular song on the CD repeatedly until saturated.

My toddler's current favorite song is "Circle Round" from the "Circle Round and Sing! Songs for family celebrations in the Goddess traditions" CD by Anne Hill.

Tip: get toddler her own Hello Kitty CD player or something. Program song.

Lesson: This, too, shall pass.

3. Take regular breaks from your PC or phone whether or not you are ready to disconnect.

My toddler forcefully steers me away from the PC or phone and commands that I dance with her while playing her favorite song (see #2 above). I get to dance with her in a circle ˜til I spin and fall on my face. A great activity to get me out of my head! I often plead for mercy.

Lesson: Teaches great humility and flexibility.

4. Spontaneously belt out a song and sing it repeatedly until someone sings along with you.

My toddler starts to sing a song and commands me to sing along. She'll keep singing ˜til I get what she's singing and start singing with her.

Lesson: Sharpen up your ears because the sooner you get it, the sooner she'll stop yelling out "MAMA!!" or "PAPA!"

Tip: Say "Your turn" to buy yourself some breathing time.

5. Spontaneously yell out a word or phrase until someone responds appropriately.

My toddler says a word or refers to something and repeats herself continuously until I get what she's saying or referring to.

Lesson: Sharpen up your ears and eyes to better hone in on what she's got her eye on. If all else fails, pick her up and walk her around until she gets in closer contact to the object of her affection/attention.
