We all have them. None of us are ever truly alone, because of the carnival troupe we all carry around with us in our heads. But how many of us have ever sat down and truly made the acquaintance of all those different voices, all those different parts of ourselves? Going further than that, how many of us have tried to determine the personalities of those voices, and reevaluated the weight we give to what those voices are saying based on the personalities they embody?

All of us, whether we like to admit it or not, go through a sort of "ranking" system with our friends and acquaintances. We decide which ones are the "voices of importance" in our lives, and which ones are basically just "background noise." Quite often, if we are functioning rationally, we base this ranking on the personalities of those we are sorting. We tend to give less weight to the criticisms of dear, widowed Aunt Mary who is always critical of anything done differently from the way Uncle John would have done it. We tend to give more weight to compliments from strangers, because we feel they are not "biased" as our loved ones are. We listen more carefully when our best friend gives us relationship advice, but since she's always broke, would not think twice about her financial advice. We seriously reconsider our actions when an older, wiser, more level-headed, and financially sound friend gives us money advice, but since he can't keep a girlfriend, don't even cock an ear towards his relationship advice. We love to spend time with Nancy, because her silliness and hijinks are just plain fun. But we would never consider taking her seriously about any advice other than the best place to party on a Saturday night.

Many of our inner voices have these same types of personalities. There are a couple of ways I have learned to recognize them. Perhaps these will work for you. If not, I am sure you can find other methods that are just as valid, for helping you "rank" your Inner Voices. The first way I recognize the personality of an inner voice that is speaking to me is the "audio picture" I have of that personality's voice. Bear with me here, for a moment, all will become clear. When you speak to someone you have never met on the phone, you might make a mental picture of what that person looks like. When you exchange messages online with someone you have never met or seen a picture of, you might make an "audio picture" of what that person would sound like saying the words you are reading. This is the same idea. Those voices in your head, although they may not actually be making actual sounds do have an "audio picture" that you equate with them.

The inner voice that always sets up a hue and cry when I have done something wrong, whether it is forgetting the grocery list until I walk into the store, overcooking the lasagna, not doing laundry for three days straight, or cutting a friend off because I was too busy to listen to her problems at that moment, has a rather screechy or tinny ring. I call her my "berater" inner voice (because all she does is berate me). My "best friend" inner voice is the one that cheers every time I get something right, and consoles me when something goes wrong. Her voice is cheerful, and much like my own, if a little more attractive. Of course, in the second instance she is often drowned out by my "football player on steroids" voice. This voice is also much like my own, but stressed, as if screaming constantly at the top of her lungs. When something goes wrong, she is instantly on the scene, looking for someone to blame, someone to hurt, someone to pay for that problem. These aren't all the voices that make up my own carnival troupe, but they are a good representation, I think.

The second way I rank my internal voices is by what they say. Just like you begin to ignore the criticisms of dear, widowed Aunt Mary because all she ever gives are criticisms, I ignore the voice of my inner Aunt Mary, because constant criticism does nothing to make life better, it only wears down my emotional balance. When inner Nancy suggests it would be great fun to go throw the apple pie I just purchased in the face of that sour-looking security officer, I ignore her. Well, I allow myself an internal giggle first, and then ignore her, simply because Nancy does NOT give good advice, and I know this. And when my inner best friend offers encouragement, and tells me I can do it, if I will only try one more time, I listen, because my inner best friend has always offered uplifting advice.

I've begun to learn over the years that, by knowing which personality within me is speaking, I can decide best how to respond. Many people don't perform this "ranking" on those voices, and wind up getting dragged down by that critical Aunt Mary who is sure they cannot do anything right. They give her entirely too much weight, and thus the "best friend" who is trying to offer guidance and support gets completely drowned out. That is one way people wind up depressed, not because of what is actually going on in their outer world, but what they are unwittingly allowing to happen in their own minds. You, however, after reading this article, don't have to be one of those people.

To begin regaining control of that carnival troupe in your head, there are really only two things you need to do. The first is grab a notebook, piece of paper, basically anything you can write on, and a pen and be ready to write, any time, anywhere. The second step is to listen. This means to really listen and consider what you're hearing in your head. Many times we listen to our internal dialogue and simply let it affect us, without really hearing what is being said or, sometimes more importantly, how it's being said. Start writing down the things these inner voices are saying. Listen carefully to the tone of voice you are hearing. Come up with "pet names" for your inner personalities. Write down anything you feel is truly important, or anything you feel you may need to refer to later, when this article isn't so fresh in your mind. These things will make it much easier for you to begin to rank your inner voices more accurately, and begin gathering the information you truly need from them.
