Years ago I was part of a two-income couple. My ex-husband and I owned a city house and lakefront property as well as two cars. Though I must have appeared successful to the outside world, I felt more and more confined in a relationship that did not satisfy my needs.

Today I define success in different terms. I have simplified my life and carved out the time to do the things that are most important to me on a regular basis. Among these are my creative work, self-development, and motivating others to live their potential. Having this kind of balance makes me feel fulfilled and therefore successful.

My thinking is along the lines of Anthony Robbins, who said "Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want."

Do you really need a BMW, designer clothes and expensive vacations to feel you've "arrived"? Do you feel compelled to impress others with your possessions or credentials?

In "The New Status Symbols" in Industry Week, Shari Caudron notes how our overworked society is realizing the value of time, control, work/family balance and fulfilling relationships. "Because these things are much harder to come by," she writes, "they are now what we admire and desire. "

The external markings of success such as wealth and possessions can very well belong to a power-hungry individual who is too insecure to live with less. The question to ask when you consider success is whether you are honoring your own integrity.

Angela is the president of a publishing company launching a mass-market book. She says, "People tend to judge you on the basis of short-term financial success. They don't see all the learning that takes place along the way."

As a single mother, she previously worked as a lecturer, freelance journalist and editor. All these experiences led to where she is today. Yet every time she took up a new challenge, she was labeled a failure for not staying where she was. To her, real success is "the willingness to keep searching for what you want to do, in spite of not yet having the outward signs of success."

It takes courage and strength to follow your own path, but striking out on your own may be necessary in order to feel satisfied with your accomplishments. Dare to follow the words of Robert Frost, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I... I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference."
