1. Organization is essential.
It doesn't matter how great your toys are, if they are scattered and broken, or heaped so that you can't find what you want, they aren't worth the space they take up. Less stuff, well cared-for and better organized, gives you the time and space to truly enjoy what you have.
2. Neatness is overrated.
Is this a contradiction of #1? Not really. While it is worthwhile to be organized and intentional about our surroundings, life is to be lived. Peanut-butter fingerprints on the counter top are a small price to pay for the sense of accomplishment gained from making your own peanut-butter sandwich for the first time.
If you are going to get in there and live life, you've got to be willing to get a little messy in the process. Just remember to clean up after yourself when you are done!
3. Our bodies are funny.
It's true. We bathe them and exercise them, feed them and groom them. We wish they would look like they did when we were twenty. But, despite our best efforts, they droop and sag, grow plumper or skinnier. They sweat, make noises, and sprout hair from unlikely places. They're funny!
Young children know this. To them, the body is a marvelous and entertaining thing to be accepted and used. It gets them where they are going. Along the way, they celebrate its minor accomplishments, and giggle at its idiosyncrasies, without vanity, judgment, or shame. What freedom!
4. It feels good to be strong.
"Show me your muscle!" Young children will hike up their sleeves to proudly display their teeny biceps, teeth and fists clenched with the effort. It is thrilling to know your strength and celebrate it. Find ways to do this every day.
5. You get to decide who you want to be, and you can change your mind at any time.
Enough said!
6. Staples hold better than glue stick.
Structural changes in your life -- ones that move you closer to your values, goals, and vision -- will last. Superficial ones will not.
7. People will eat what's appealing and play with what's handy.
Plan your meals and arrange your space accordingly. Make it easy for yourself to make high-quality and intentional choices.
8. Stories are powerful.
We are hard-wired for metaphor. We internalize symbolic messages subconsciously. Powerful imagery intensifies a message's impact. Pay attention to the stories and images you allow into your awareness, and the ones you tell yourself. Be intentional and selective -- surround yourself with empowering, positive symbols and words.
9. We learn and accomplish best at the challenge level, as opposed to the boredom or frustration levels.
In your work and your play, seek the level at which you expend thought and effort, and experience growth and success.
10. Everybody needs to be held.
If you have developed barriers to this, work through them. It is too important to miss.
