Trust Your Intuition, Ladies: If You Smell a Rotten Apple, You're Probably Living with One!

You breeze through the kitchen, a hundred things whizzing through your mind, and suddenly it hits you: a whiff of a maddeningly rancid odor assaults your olfactory system, declaring that something's gone "off."

You ransack the fridge, throwing out anything past or even approaching its expiration date, replace the box of smell-absorbing baking soda; you delve into the pantry searching for anything semi-moist that might be harboring fugitive mold.

You sniff all the rags, polishers and tea towels for potential mildew. You re-check the kitty litter box in the adjacent mudroom. You clean every surface and every crevice of the kitchen with antiseptic cleaner, and give your food disposal system a lemon juice and vinegar enema.

You breathe in a heavy sigh of relief, knowing you've done everything you can to put the kitchen in order. But wait, when you inhaled again that hint of stench was still there! "Maybe the smell isn't really there," you tell yourself, "Maybe I'm imagining things." But you know it is. You can smell it.

Much the same thing happens when a marriage goes bad -- and here again we women, I think, tend to have the "sensitive nose" for picking up on lies or subtle changes in behavior, much like we pick up on a bad odor in the house. Yet we're likely to ignore the intuition and rationalize the state of affairs, telling ourselves, "Maybe he really is just busy at work," or, "Maybe things will get better when ... [fill in the blank]."

All of this amounts to telling yourself that your perceptions are faulty. But, just like with the bad smell, you KNOW a problem exists, that something is "off." You can smell it, so to speak.

Bad Apple Check-List

So, ask yourself honestly if you've caught a whiff of any of the following:

• He makes excuses for not being around, like working late, having a "work crisis" or "unexpected deadline," etc.

• He makes excuses for not spending time with you when he is around, or he favors activities that involve other people, so that you're not alone together.

• He gets strange phone calls or pages, or you get odd "hang-ups". Note: try *69 on these.

• He watches hours on end of T.V. or avoids you with video or computer games, etc.

• He tells you he'll be tied up in his off hours or weekends with work functions that spouses aren't invited to, but doesn't dress appropriately when he leaves for these functions.

• He becomes more concerned with his appearance and clothes, and with being youthful.

• He stops buying you gifts or wanting to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, etc.

• He becomes more detached from his family, and doesn't want to be around yours.
