Take a look around at your family, friends, and coworkers -- how many of these people are constantly focused on the negative? It's difficult enough to keep our OWN thoughts positive -- to input encouraging self-talk into our own mind -- but when the negative influence is coming from someone outside of yourself, your process to prosperity and abundance becomes extremely blocked.

Anyone who manages to drag you down, make you feel angry, worn out, deflated, belittled or confused is a potentially toxic person to your growth. Here are some steps you can take to uncover it, and deal with it:

1.) Make a list of people in your life and the type of negative behavior they exhibit on a regular basis in your presence. I stress on a regular basis, because every person exhibits negativity sometimes -- that is normal.

2.) Look at each person on the list -- decide if this is a person you have a choice in spending time with. Can you eliminate being around this person altogether? If so, please consider it. If not, read on.

3.) One way to diffuse the negative is simply to ignore it. You might even choose to say "Thank you for sharing that" and then walk away. If you don't allow yourself to be sucked into the negativity, this puts an end to the exposure.

4.) Another way to diffuse negativity is to laugh at it. Giving the person a humorous response usually puts an end to the comments or conversation, and it might even bring a smile to their face!

5.) Alternatively, you could counteract their negative comments with positive ones. You can choose to do this aloud, or in your own mind. Reframing their negative comment into a positive one, even if you don't share it with them, inputs positive instead of negative energy inside yourself.

Example: John says (for the 100th time), "I'll never be rich." Wife Sarah says in reply, "John, you already *are* rich -- take a look at your talents, and what you have achieved so far..." Sarah has counteracted John's negative comment with a positive one. she has found the good and is focused on bringing it to the surface.

If John chooses to argue the point, and he continues to be negative, Sarah could implement step #3 above and simply walk away. Sarah cannot change or control John, but she can control her responses and exposure levels to his negativity.

6.) As a last resort, you could really let the negative person have it.

Tell them in a firm manner how much their negativity upsets you, and how you simply no longer wish to be around it. This usually upsets the other person at first, but they will come around, and soon you will notice much less negative behavior displayed, freeing you to focus on the positive aspects of your life and your growth.

The above is the process I have followed regarding toxic people in my own life. It works very well for me. Sometimes I use only one of the steps -- sometimes I must use them all.

As a result of using the above techniques, I have been able to almost totally eliminate my exposure to negativity. Of course, it still creeps in sometimes, but I have the above steps integrated into my consciousness and I can apply them again when necessary.

The more important thing to remember is this -- Ultimately, you can only change yourself, not someone else. It's up to you to decide how much negativity around you will or will not accept. If you are ready, make an effort today to eliminate any toxic people in your life, or come up with a solution on ways you can deal with the person in order to be protected from their negative comments.

Affirm that you are surrounded by giving and loving people from this point forward, and watch your life become a brighter place.
