Do's and Don'ts For First Dates

Whether you are 16 or 60 first dates are nerve wracking - here are some serious, and not so serious do's and don'ts.
1. Do be polite!
For men this may mean offering to pay, opening doors, pulling out a chair, taking a coat - basic good manners. Women, you can offer to pay too, and hope they refuse. Say thank you, be kind.
2. Do have low expectations.
It's way too much pressure to be thinking every first date you have may be with "the one." Relax and enjoy getting out. If it's terrible, know you'll never have to do it again.
3. Do make it brief.
If it's a blind date make it for coffee or something equally easy to exit from. Don't let yourself get stuck on a long road trip with someone you don't know. In and out is best.
4. Don't discuss your divorce, break up or child support battles.
Being emotionally slutty is unattractive. Don't over-share. Someone you are having a first date with is not the right person to discuss your life's woes with. Save that for a close friend.
5. Do be in the moment.
As you sit there don't think about whether or not this could be the person to have a baby with, retire with, or build that dream life with. Take it one step at a time. Deep breath.
6. Do make eye contact.
There's nothing worse than trying to talk to someone who won't look at you. It comes across as insecure and unsure - not the message you want to convey.
7. Do check your body language.
Are you sitting like you are being interrogated or is your body showing that you are open and friendly? Be aware of what non-verbal signals you're sending out.
8. Do be yourself.
It's not easy on a first date. We all tend to send our ambassador on our first dates. Have the confidence in who you are to just be yourself.
9. Do let your interest show - subtly.
Don't be over anxious, but if you want to see the person again, say something to make it clear. Something like, "There's a great concert coming up that I have two tickets for, I'd love it if you would like to come."
10. Do not take it personally if it doesn't work out.
Dating is like a part time job. And sometimes it's no fun. But, if you want to meet someone special you need to do it. Look at every not so great date as a learning experience. If you meet for coffee (per suggestion) it's only an hour out of your life. What do you have to lose?
