Dating in the 21st century has become rather less problematic than even some 30 years ago. In the past your options were depressingly restricted. Either you met your perfect match and dream partner by chance, or you didn't at all.
Ironically, many people are still stuck in the same situation, not realizing that they are able to rely less on fate and more on modern technology to extend their options and take matters into their own hands.
If you are lonely, frustrated and disillusioned with ever finding Mister or Miss right, you now only have yourself to blame.
Of course not all the modern ways of finding a partner are created equal. You may, like most decent people, find some of these methods to be somewhat embarrassing and compromising. Anonymous newspaper ads, for example. Or perhaps you could register with a matchmaking agency.
The problem with both these routes is that you lose your privacy and anonymity the moment you are put in touch with a "suitable" candidate. Since you still know very little about any candidate, you are again at the mercy of fate, let alone the discretion of the other person.
More blind dates. More rolling of the dice. Further embarrassment and lack of control. Stalkers and other dodgy people are just some of the characters you may unwittingly invite into your personal space.
The alternative of hanging out in bars and clubs can be equally frustrating, not to mention damaging to your bank balance. These environments are hardly conducive to meaningful conversation anyway, so there is a lot of trial and error and awkward breakfasts to be had.
Fortunately, there is a sane alternative at last. The Internet has brought us dating options that are significantly more palatable and discreet.
At first glance, you may think this is just an online version of the personal ads you'll find in any newspaper - the notion that you have a look at other people's ads and can post your own.
Yet, this is where the similarities end. In a newspaper, you get a close to meaningless, brief profile of a person. If you want to know more, you will have to get paper and pencil ready, or commit yourself to a telephone call and by doing so, surrender your privacy.
In contrast, a sincere, online personal ad, handled by a trustworthy service, provides extensive profiles of all its members. These include looks, attitudes, personality traits, desires, values and beliefs, to name a few.
Also, each person has the opportunity to comprehensively describe who he or she is looking for. Often, there are photos available. So you can get a complete impression of a person, before investing more time in a detailed check of him or her.
