8 Sure-Fire Strategies for Getting Started

Starting can sometimes be half or more of the battle. It's kind of like how the anticipation phase of something can give us more stress and worry than the actual event. (well, ok, except for going to the Dentist!) Once you can break through your barriers and get started, you're almost home free. Here are some tips to help you get you going.

1. Establish a habit of PLANNING.

When you make your first step in anything to plan it out, you'll save yourself from unnecessary worry, time, and stress. Make your decisions ahead of time about how you will approach a task, outline the specific steps you will take, identify resources you can use and people who can help, and set up a personal advisory team you can consult with if needed.

2. CLEARLY DEFINE exactly what you need to get done.

Many of us can't get started simply because we don't have a good understanding of what we are going to do. Take the time to figure out a measurable end result that you understand.

3. OWN the task.

Find a way to enhance or put a twist on tasks so that you can personally commit to them. If you don't "buy into" what you're doing, you'll be more likely to avoid it. Find a way so there is something in it for you and so you can make it a personal priority, (i.e. pride in quality work, sense of accomplishment, potential promotion/raise, increased knowledge and skills, etc.)

4. BREAK DOWN your tasks or projects into doable steps.

Outline what you think needs to get done in order to complete your task down to a level where you can see yourself being able to complete specific steps. If you end up with some steps that will each take a long time, break those down into time segments, i.e. complete it in 3 15-minute increments. This is time well spent and will reduce your stress level rather than increase it like spending this time worrying would do.

5. SHARE your plan.

Ask someone else to help you finalize your plan and track and celebrate your progress. This will build in some accountability for you and you might get some useful input, too!

6. IMPLEMENT ONE STEP AT A TIME.

Don't try to do everything at once. "Rome wasn't built in a day" and "you eat an elephant one bite at a time." Take time for breaks (especially with the more tedious steps)

7. Adopt an 80% RULE.

Instead of reaching for perfectionism, take an attitude that reaching 80% of that is a great start. Once you get your task done, you can continue to improve upon it later. In life, everything is a work in progress, so why not consider the work you do in the same way?

8. Learn to FOCUS.

The ability to focus is a skill and can be learned. When you're overwhelmed with the 99 other tasks you have to do, you're not able to focus on the one thing that you've been avoiding. Know your priorities, focus on the important tasks. One good way to stop thinking about other tasks is to schedule them on specific dates. Instead of a to-do list with a month's worth of tasks, work with one just for that day.
