Bored People Are Boring

Are you finding yourself bored and uninspired more often than not? Do you ever find yourself with free time, maybe you took a couple of days off, and you can't think of anything to do but turn on the television? "I don't know what to do with myself. I'm climbing the walls." Well, remind yourself that bored people are boring people.

In this vast, amazing world of ours I can find absolutely no excuse for being bored. Have I been guilty of this myself? Yes, and I am ashamed of it. There is no end to the number of things that I could do, explore, or learn with very little-to-no money output required. The possibilities are only limited by my lack of willingness to expend energy, and my ability to be creative. Curiosity is the key to living an interesting life.

I admit that there are situations when we would love to be doing something else more exciting, but we have committed ourselves to certain activities that are mentally unchallenging but, nevertheless, require our undivided attention.

The first example that comes to mind is caring for an infant. I chose to stay at home with my children when they were infants, and found the experience to be absolutely mind-numbing. I adore my boys, and realized at the time how fortunate I was to be able to have the opportunity to spend the time with them, but it didn't change the fact that I found myself seriously under challenged and bored out of my mind.

My problem, which is the same for many people, was that I simply didn't choose to be creative enough to rise to the occasion. The "occasion" may be any activity, situation, or job that is rather tedious. It can also simply be time on your hands.

The more I succumbed to my "situation", the more boring I became. I was a downer, and I had little to offer to conversations with other adults. This made me feel even worse, and the cycle continued until the day I realized I had no one to blame but myself.

I realized I could continue to feel sorry for myself and pathetic and unenergetic. I could continue to blame others for my unhappiness. Or, I could get my butt in gear and change my life. No one but I had the power to change my attitude, and to make my life better.

How I personally turned my life around isn't relevant. Each person has to find their own way; their own path of inspiration. What interests me may not interest you. Are you now low enough to feel inspired to reawaken your creativity? Can you muster the energy to take new steps; to feel interested and engaged in life again?

Here are some ideas for starting. Let me ask you:

• Do you have talents you are wasting?
• When is the last time you did something nice or unexpected for a friend or neighbor?
• When is the last time you read or viewed a really thought-provoking book or movie?
• Have you ever wondered why-- or how--? Look up the answer.
• Do you ever make time to volunteer, or give of yourself to others?
• Have you always wanted to ______? Even if you don't have the time or money now, you can start to get the information you need to proceed.
• Do you know what's going on in the world right now? Do you know what life is like for people in other countries? Find out, because it does affect your life in ways you would never comprehend otherwise.
• Do you create, practice, or enjoy art, music, or writing?
• How many times can you make someone laugh today?

Tap that powerful mind of yours to think of interesting ways to explore your world, and to live the one life that you have to the fullest. Don't waste a single day. Make boredom a crime.
