The field with the long name -- psychoneuroimmunology -- provides new confirmation daily of what we've long suspected -- the link between our emotions and our well-being. The good news is emotional intelligence can be learned. "You can empower people to alter their perceptions," Christopher Coe, Ph.D., says, "and thereby to prevent these immune changes from occurring."
1. Both the number and performance of our "killer" white blood cells decline when we're stressed.

2. Researchers can predict decrease in the immune system by brain electrical patterns reflecting an individual's emotional state -- happy, lonely, depressed, stressed.

3. Stress causes serotonin to fail, and when this happens, you can't get restful sleep no matter what you do.

4. When stress interferes with dopamine function, our "pleasure center" becomes inoperative.
Things that used to give us pleasure no longer do, and when dopamine / endorphin malfunction is severe, life becomes painful.

5. We can never rebalance our brain chemistry by using pickups such as caffeine, sugar, alcohol or illegal drugs.
And research has shown that people suffering from overstress will find the stimulation they bring particularly compelling. In effect, they're 'starving,' so the pickup is enormous, but so is the letdown.
6. Stress causes greater levels of cortisol (called "the stress hormone") which can result in metabolic disturbances and in severe cases may lead to life-threatening diseases.

7. Optimists live 19% longer (Martin Seligman, Ph.D.) and pessimists show the predictable decline in immune system (Coe).
8. Resilience to adversity correlates highly with problem-oriented coping rather than emotion-oriented coping.

9. Adults remain social animals; we continue to require a source of stabilization outside ourselves for wellness.
According to Lewis, Amini and Lannon, MDs, in "A General Theory of Love," "stability means finding people who regulate you well and staying near them." (Note, this is not the same thing as "codependency.")
10. "Dividing the mind into 'biological' and 'psychological' is as fallacious as classifying light as a particle or a wave."
"Physical mechanisms produce one's experience of the world," say Lewis, Amini and Lannon, "and experience, in turn, remodels the neurons whose chemoelectric messages create consciousness."
