As for pedaling speed, the standard number of revolutions per minute is 80 - 90. You can verify your cadence by counting the number of times in 15 seconds your foot reaches the bottom of your pedal stroke. Multiply that by four and you get an idea how fast you're turning the pedals.

Sound complicated? A cycling computer, an inexpensive gadget that sites on your handle bars, can do the counting for you.

Hills and Beyond

Proper cadence for climbing is 70-80 rpms. Adjust your gears to help maintain a steady effort as you climb, making sure you gear down before your legs feel the extra effort. Stay seated as long as you can, standing only when the challenge becomes too much. On long climbs, alternate between standing and sitting which helps relieve muscle fatigue.

Road Hazards

You can count on coming across lots of cracks, potholes and other road hazards that can be disastrous if handled improperly. When faced with a sudden obstacle, avoid it if you can, making sure to look ahead, not directly at it. That might sound simple, but many people fixate on a target, increasing their likelihood of hitting it.

If you must ride over a pothole or large crack in the road, stop pedaling and lift your butt slightly out of the seat. Hang on to the bike and keep your elbows and knees bent and wheels straight. Assume the same position when crossing train tracks, but position your front wheel perpendicular to the tracks.

Aches and Pains

Sore knees and butt are the most common complaint among novice cyclists. Reduce the chances of knee pain by keeping your cadence in a comfortable range. Too much resistance is hard on the knees.

So, too, is a poorly fitted bike. Too high a seat often results in pain located in the back of the knee. Too low a seat leads to pain in the front of the knee.

As for the buttocks, most pain eases as you become accustomed to spending time in the saddle. If pain persists, try lowering the handlebars or raising the seat just enough to support more of your body weight on your hands instead of your butt.

Water Bottle: Install a water bottle holder on your bike and make sure you keep water handy at all times. Drink every 15 minutes, stopping to fill your bottle as often as needed.

First-aid Kit: Complete with Band-Aids, most towelettes saturated with disinfectant, sunscreen, Medicare card, bank card, identification with phone number and next-of-kin information, money for a phone call.

Snacks: Pack small, energy-dense snacks to keep your muscles fuelled during a long ride. Fig Newtons, Granola bars, dried fruit or an energy bar are good choices.

Tire-patch Kit: Compact kits are available at most cycling stores.
