As kids we hopped on our bikes and cycled all over the neighborhood without a thought about what to wear or how to turn the pedals. But times have changed.

Like other leisure-activities, cycling has gone high-tech. Bikes, clothing, seats and tires have changed since the day you learned to ride. What hasn't changed are the benefits of cycling. Not only is it great for your heart and lungs, it's without the impact stress of running and you don't have to try to squeeze into a Speedo.

If you're a novice cyclist or are considering using your bike for more than the occasional ride with the kids, the following tips are for you. They'll improve your technique and help you get in shape. And don't worry, there's no need to discard your old bicycle for something newer; sleeker and more expensive. The focus is on the rider; not the bike.

Getting Ready

First, take a look at your wardrobe. Gone are the days of using a clip to keep your pants from getting caught in the bike chain. Form-fitting clothes are not only safer, they reduce wind resistance.

Invest in a pair of padded cycling shorts that protect your thighs from chaffing. If you're ill at ease with their tight appearance, choose a style that looks like regular shorts but includes padding, or opt for special padded underwear that can be worn with the over-garments of your choice.

Cycling shirts, made from high-tech material, are better than a cotton T-shirt at controlling sweat, and their colorful style makes cyclists more visible to drivers. Plus, the three pockets on the back are a great place to store items needed during the ride. Jack Friefield, a veteran cyclist, and group cycling instructor, has a distinct use for each pocket on his jersey.

"One pocket carries food, one a first-aid kit and one a repair kit," he said. All items are packed in zip-lock plastic baggies making them easy to carry.

Add a helmet, a bandanna under your helmet to absorb sweat, and a good pair of sunglasses, and you'll feel better cycling.

Pedaling Savvy

Proper pedaling starts with the ball of the foot placed firmly on the pedal, keeping the foot straight -- not toeing in or out.

Visualize turning your pedals around the face of a clock. Most novices press down hard between 2 and 4 o'clock, then relax during the rest of the stroke cycle. Improve efficiency by starting the push downward at 12 o'clock, then pulling back on the pedal as your foot reaches 4 o'clock. Cycling magazine says the pullback motion should feel like scraping mud off your shoes.

Cycling shoes with clip-in pedals or toe clips make it easier to perfect the pedal stroke. If you don't feel comfortable with either, Friefield recommends wearing a stiff-soled shoe with good grip. Gain further practice by pedaling with one foot, which requires you to work throughout the complete stroke cycle.
