When An Interviewer Delivers an Insult

Q. "As part of a job interview, I was asked to make a brief presentation to demonstrate my speaking skills. I've been a keynote speaker at two meetings and I've lost count of how many seminars I've led. What an insult!"

A. One young client was temping while awaiting her big break. She felt degraded when she was asked to take a typing test. I advised her to imagine how Joe Montana might react if he had to demonstrate throwing the football or how Michael Jordan might respond to a request for a sample lay-up shot. They'd perform so splendidly the interviewer would be embarrassed. .

For a lower-key example, rent the movie Bring it On. Yes, I know, it's a cheerleader movie, but, viewed as satire, it's not bad. Pay special attention to the spot where a trained gymnast competes at tryouts. The squad asks her to do certain moves, and she does what she's asked and more -- with a look on her face that says, "You must be kidding. This is easy."

On the other hand, being asked to jump through many hoops can be a warning signal: you're too senior or they're excessively bureaucratic.

Ned, a professional writer, responded to requests for a writing sample with six articles and ten glowing reviews of his last book. His potential employer, overwhelmed by Ned's talent, chose a less qualified applicant.

But it's a judgment call.

Janet patiently responded to requests for reports, sample assignments, transcripts from undergraduate days -- everything but her kindergarten record. Once on the job, she discovered the hiring process was governed by the Human Resource paper chase culture. Her own department was friendly, laid-back and creative.

Fifteen years later, she remains with the firm -- happy, fulfilled and dazzling job applicants with a mountain of requests of her own.
