Working online can be very isolating. Just think about it for a minute--you can contact thousands of people through a website or newsletter, yet never hear a voice, see a face or touch any other person's hand.

As people finish up with their summer vacations and begin to get back into the fall routine, now might be a great time to drop some special people a line and tell them how much you appreciate them. Here are some ideas to help you contact your "internet buddies":

1. Send them a card.

Yeah, you COULD send them an "e-card," but actually writing a little note and dropping it in the mail can mean so much. Most people list a mailing address on their website. Buy a small stack of THANK YOU cards and use them.

2. Send them an email "for no reason."

We all constantly ask one another for advice or information about our businesses. It's part of being online. We need one another. A great way to show one of those people who you depend on your appreciation is to simply send them an email saying "thanks."

3. Extol their virtues on your favorite newsgroup or forum.

Imagine having one or two people telling the entire world how great you are--pretty cool, huh? So why not do that for someone else? If you're not comfortable posting to forums or newsgroups, here is a resource to help you:

4. Send their boss a letter.

This only applies when the person works for someone else. I regularly send letters commending excellent customer service people to their bosses. I have a letter already set up in my computer, I make a few changes and fire it off. It takes me about 5 minutes, but I have been told that, on occasion, that letter has been passed around throughout the company.

5. Give them a call.

Don't talk long, but just call and say "I appreciate you." It can make a huge difference in a person's outlook. There's also another great benefit: You might just end up having more "real" friends online.
