This line about the lack of spousal compassion is STILL one of the most widely used. I guess that means it's still one of the most widely (and easily) accepted.

Ho hum as it may be, I can't help being surprised that it continues to work so well. Then again, maybe it makes little sense that I should be so 'boggled'. It's not as if I don't know this is more about the art of flattering some-one else's ego than anything else.

Here some guy is 'ratting' on his wife to YOU, so it can be safely assumed that YOU must be pretty terrific; really special. Let's face it. This 'good guy' wouldn't be so insensitive as to tell his personal business to someone who was the same way as his significant other, right?

The poor thing is just so doggone frustrated and stifled. All he wants is for someone to listen and make a real effort to 'feel' what he's going through.

Before anyone starts considering themselves some kind of lucky duck, let's examine some of the ways wives just don't understand and how the other female is summing it up.

Let's be honest. If you can 'make sense' of why you are the Selected Golden Girl, that takes care of any residual guilt or feelings of betrayal, right?

1. She doesn't understand the need to be a man! Boy, is his wife out in left field! This poor guy is only trying to assert his influence as man of the house. Why is she bellyaching so much about 'control'?

All he's doing is suggesting ways to cook, clean, raise the kids, spend money, save money, cut her hair, pick some decent friends, offer wardrobe opinions, decide which job she should take, or not work at all, and how she can handle it. At least he's involved; what's the problem?

2. She doesn't understand companionship needs! What the heck's the big deal about wanting to spend Friday and Saturday nights with the fellas? Everyone knows men like to bond. Besides, working guys need time to relax. This couple would have a much better relationship if she'd quit the nagging and try to find something to do with her own time!

3. She doesn't understand his family! Come on! This in-law argument is so ridiculous and Lord knows it's as old as the hills! How hard is it to realize his parents have every right to ask personal questions, offer advice, pass on tried and true ways of making him more content and, yes, randomly popping in.

So the wife heard a thing or two about herself through a conversation. Why make gossip out of harmless chit-chat? She needs to lighten up!

4. She doesn't understand the Overtime! Give me a break! Everyone knows that dealing with this crazy economy is a killer! It's not so difficult to comprehend that all those extra hours are necessary! So what if she thinks the money he brings home don't stack up to all those hours! Hasn't she ever heard of taxes?

5. She doesn't understand weight gain is a turn-off! He's put on a pound or two, as well?. Big deal! That's not the issue and you know how men are. She's 'supposed' to keep looking good, no matter what and she knows it! Women who don't pay attention have only themselves to blame if their guy develops a roving eye. She better get a grip because he's only human!

6. She doesn't understand a man needs stroking! The wife is really falling down on the job! Men like to be told how strong, handsome and virile they are. They like knowing their intelligence is respected. These should be important daily reinforcements.

Okay, so maybe he's not Mr. Complimentary. It's probably because he's so exhausted. Besides, women are better at this. Men also appreciate 'little' things like a mid-day phone call or being treated to lunch. How come the wife needs to be reminded how far these thing go and to make more time for them? Those constant excuses about the kids, the house and other stuff - Brother!

7. She doesn't understand that he is LONELY! What is wrong with these women? Can't they see their men are hurting and need them? You don't let your guy to flounder around feeling ignored and undervalued! Men want and need to talk, to really communicate and they require the phsyical aspects of a relationship.

Sure, they know somebody's got to take care of the house and the kids, getting them back and forth to activities and through homework, somebody's responsible for that "My Kid Is An Honor Roll Student" bumper sticker they love to show off, but geez! These women would be treated like royalty if only they'd let their men know they are there for them, too!

Maybe the above is too simplistic; maybe not. I've heard the lines and have held hands with many women who have listened to them, too. Some took the words way too much to heart and ended up just as hurt and confused as the non-understanding wife.

Our personal relationships need help, but until we willingly look at the issues, no help can be had. Many 'other women' do not start out with that in mind. Their goal was not to be anyone's second choice, or a go-between between a husband and wife.

It's easy to get sucked into feeling you are the answer. Actually, it's fleetingly powerful. The hard lesson is learning that when you STOP being everything he needs, you'll discover that your understanding skills somehow don't measure up, either.
