Skills for the Land of Oz

When you're changing careers, moving, starting a business, retiring or going back to school, you may feel as though you were blown away by a hurricane.

Remember the Wizard of Oz? Dorothy was right. We're not in Kansas anymore. What works now?

Scrambling

When you've been living in the same place for awhile, life becomes a football game. You are rewarded for being in the right place at the right time, ready to play your assigned position. Your bumper sticker reads, "No surprises!"

Now you're in a pickup basketball game. "Who's got next?"

Multi-tasking

Pre-transition, you have the luxury of saying, "Wait till I've finished with this project. I need to concentrate."

Now your life resembles a three-ring circus: staying in touch with the past you leave behind, paying attention to the present and preparing for the future. New theme: "Let me put you on hold for just a minute."

Serendipity

Being open to exploration is perhaps the most difficult and challenging skill that we learn in Oz. Researchers who have studied life change find that serendipitous events play a larger role than most people realize. Often your greatest opportunity will arrive on your doorstep, unannounced.

Only one guarantee: After you've been blown to Oz and back, Kansas won't look the same any more. And if I had to guess, I suspect Oz veterans, for a long time afterward, will remain on alert for the next hurricane and be better prepared to weather the storm.
