An Invited Guest

When I lived in Florida, I made the mistake of setting up a guest room. Some guests helped around the house, walked the dog, admired the cats and took me to dinner. Others sat in the living room waiting to be entertained -- and complained about the contents of my refrigerator.

Inviting change into your life is much like inviting a guest to your home. You're taking a chance. Your life may never be the same! You need to set limits ("positively no special orders for breakfast") and be flexible. Routine? Forget it.

Sometimes when you realize what you're getting into, you may be tempted to withdraw the invitation.

I recommend welcoming changes as you would your house guests. Ideally they'll bring more joy than hassle into your life -- but don't count on it.

Most people are glad they welcomed change, just as we look fondly back on the visitors who came a few months ago. Usually, after guests left, I missed them -- even if I had spent their entire visit anticipating the moment I would watch the plane take off with them safely on board.

And we learn from experience. After a few rounds of guests, we're better prepared to respond to the unexpected. We don't go dashing to the store when someone says, "Gee, I wish we had muffins instead of toast." And we know where we can take guests without serious damage to our energy or our finances.

Most of all, we know how to decide who's invited back, and when.
