Meaning and Purpose at Midlife

"I want work that is meaningful."

Questions of meaning and purpose emerge often at midlife, when people are beginning to look forward rather than backward. How many years to retirement -- and what can I do with those years? What legacy do I want to leave in my work and my life? And in the holiday season, we often turn inward to ask, "What's it all about, anyway?"

Spiritual leaders as well as research psychologists agree: a sense of meaning adds to quality of life at any age. In my business, I find midlife clients often ask these questions and search for answers. There is no simple turnkey operation to find a life purpose -- but here are some guidelines to get started.

1. Meaning is about goals. When you have an underlying purpose that guides your direction in several areas of life, you begin to get a sense of meaning and purpose.

2. Meaning can come from a number of sources. Some people turn to traditional religions, but you can also find meaning in relationships, personal growth, passionate interests, creativity, and/or your own personal spirituality.

3. Meaning sneaks up on you! You probably have a lot more meaning in your life than you realize.

4. Pursuing your meaning is like trying to grab a cat. If you wait patiently in the right place, the cat will come jump in your lap. Just as you can tempt the cat with tunafish, you can also encourage a greater awareness of purpose in your life by creating space and openness.

5. A meaningful life is not necessarily a happy one. However, many experts believe that happiness rarely occurs without a sense of meaning and purpose. And I suspect that we have many meanings and purposes in a lifetime, sometimes simultaneously, sometimes sequentially.
