That force alone gave her energy, drive and focus. She then went about a process of overcoming her fear, doubt, insecurity and past behavior in order to reach her goal.
In fact, over the next few weeks as Cathy and I talked she also came to understand that much of what she had thought about herself and her own capability was just made up in her mind. Fantasy she had created.
With that fantasy came a set of rules and beliefs about what she could and couldn't do or accomplish. But then Thom died, everything changed and guess what? Cathy had to re-write the rules, which she did.
Now, she has new and stronger rules and beliefs about what she can and can't do. Those new beliefs give her power, drive and accomplishment.
What Cathy didn't realize until we had this conversation was that she was employing a system for success. She had created a huge reason for herself to do certain things, things she previously didn't believe she could do.
That reason was the preservation of a way of life for her children.
She could have said "Why me?" She could have been a victim. But she chose a different more empowering course.
She learned what it took to do all of those things and she mastered the process. Part of that mastery was creating new rules of behavior and beliefs about her abilities.
Once I pointed all of this out to Cathy she realized that for her to lose weight would require the same process. She could employ this same system to her body and achieve her desired outcome with that as well.
In other words, even though Cathy was working out with a trainer and believed she wanted to weigh less this desire had not made its way into the top three things on "her list".
Until a desire is strong enough to become one of your top three priorities its really just a wish and a prayer. You aren't driven toward that desire unless your day revolves around it.
For Cathy, in the beginning her priorities were her children, their schedules and her own golf game. Until these things were scheduled little else fit into her day.
Eating, working out and a fit lifestyle were incidental to everything else.
Later, after her husband died things shifted. She had new desires and reasons for wanting them. Only then did her "list" change and with it her behavior.
You can achieve whatever you want including changing your body. First, you must come up with some compelling reasons to do so. Your why. Reasons you truly believe and that will propel your desire to the top three slots in your life's priorities.
This isn't that hard. Think about other times in your life when you have overcome obstacles and your own emotions to get a desired outcome. Hopefully, they weren't as dramatic as Cathy's but either way I'm sure you've done this in your past.
Find that experience and begin taking notes of first why its accomplishment was important, then how you did it. What about your self-talk and your inner thoughts?
Did you change those too in order to alter the outcomes? Make a list. Learn from your life because if you've lived there are things you are proud of.
I'm certain they hold the key to your weight loss success.
