Saying good-by to a job?

Leaving for a new opportunity? Being laid off? You're humming the popular tune, "Take this job and ..." but you want to a more effective way to say good-bye.

(1) How are you investing time and energy in a job you know will end soon? Review your priorities. Don't risk losing your job and do continue to provide value to your employer.

But before you donate overtime to an extra project, make time for your own job search. A coach, consultant or support group can help you operate on two tracks for awhile. Think satisfactory -- not outstanding.

(2) Will you need references? One reference-checking service finds that fifty percent of their clients are held back by bad references. Meet with your boss to establish a relationship before you need one. Say, "Look, I will need a job and I'm going to need your help. What can we do?"

(3) Don't be surprised if you find yourself mourning a job you've been hating for years. Experience creates a comfort zone and leaving a comfort zone can be terrifying. Transitioning calls for a whole new set of skills -- and you need time to learn them.

Bottom line: Don't think of leaving. Think of laying a foundation for your future. And for most people, after six months the old job becomes a dim and distant memory.
