That's Right for YOU!
If you're thinking of starting a business, or getting support for an ongoing business, you will have no shortage of options for advice. Some are paid, some are free and some are unwelcome. Here are some ways to make your own evaluations.
1. Mentors serve as role models and guides because they are already doing what you want to do. To find a mentor, be a good mentee, and develop your own inner mentor.
2. Wet blankets warn you of everything that can go wrong. They often are external manifestations of inner fears.
3. Poison darts actually harm you, often when you don't realize what's happening. Bad references, misleading information, unkind acts --all are symptoms. Too many? Ask what else is going on in your life.
4. Career tests may be useful but controversial. Before paying for tests, find out the service's typical customer and learn how results will be interpreted.
5. Coaches and counselors will be helpful if they have experience with clients in your situation. A resource that works with high-profile corporate clients may be less successful if you're a maverick who needs to be off the beaten path.
6. Referrals will be useful when you're seeking information. Ask friends, acquaintances, even strangers if they know someone who can help in your quest.
7. Self-help books may have a special meaning for you. Walk into a bookstore or library and let your intuition guide you through the shelves. Often you will find just the book you need --and next time you will find something else.
8. Teleclasses and continuing education will introduce you to more resources. Often they are conducted by professionals who work with clients; you can sample their style before making a commitment.
9. Friends and family can be bridges or blocks. Get family on board as you evaluate new careers. Family and friends can be great sources of support, or they may resist accepting the "new you."
10. Choose wisely: "Too many cooksŠ" Every so often I get a call from someone who's got two coaches, a therapist, a psychic, an outplacement specialist and a shelf full of self-help books. They're overwhelmed! Like drug interactions, career advisors cancel each other out and some have side effects. Be selective.
