You May Want to Rethink the Artificial Tan This Winter

Baking like an old lizard on a rock, I used to call it. How I loved the sun; especially to head for the Coast in the spring. I felt like it baked out the aches and pains. I know it raised my spirits.

Fortunately with my second pregnancy I got nauseated when I sat in the sun, and along about then the first literature on skin cancer started coming out, so it was an easy segue to just stay in the shade most of the time.

Also when you live in San Antonio, TX, the sun is not the thrill it is, say, in Sweden.

To tan or not to tan? Also I lived in the North, where the sun is tepid . but also I have blue green eyes . but also no one in my family has had skin cancer . but also I live in South Texas now where the sun is everywhere, coming in every window . but also I look so much better with a tan.

The factors for skin cancer -- melanoma -- are considered to be family history, prominent or unusual moles, possible exposure to UV radiation in sunlight, and some consider hair coloring, etc.

You've been living under the rock, not sunning on it if you haven't heard that exposure to sunlight can cause skin cancer. But now, in an article entitled, "Fake Tan, Real Cancer," from Web MD Medical News, guess what's probably even worse?

Tanning booths! According to recent studies, if you've ever visited a tanning salon you're 1 1/2 times more likely to get squamous call skin cancer (http://www.skincancer.org/squamous) and 2 1/2 times more likely to get basal cell skin cancer (http://www.skincancer.org/basal/index.php). And notice that's "ever."

A new Swedish study conducted on 160,000 women, reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that no matter the woman's age or hair color, women who had visited a tanning salon prior, at least once a month, were 55% more likely to later develop melanoma (http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/info/melan/melan-3a.htm). It's important because, since mice don't get skin cancer, we have to track lifestyle patterns and occurrence of disease later on.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 28 million of us Americans are tanning indoors every year, despite the fact that "the evidence that ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer is overwhelming and convincing." Tanning devices emit ultraviolet (UV) light.

"James Spencer, MD, spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology and vice chairman of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, was surprised at the size of the results. "We knew artificial tanning was bad," he said, "but it's worse than we thought. This is a large, powerful study and I think what it does is confirm what we suspected.

"In a way, it's confirming the obvious," he said. "We know that ultraviolet light from the sun causes skin cancer, and we presumed that ultraviolet light from tanning salons also causes skin cancer, although there's no direct experimental way to show that." Spencer was not involved in the study.

Not surprisingly, a spokesman from the (US) Tanning Association says it's a Swedish study, on Swedish women, with Swedish equipment, and Swedish attitudes, so it doesn't apply elsewhere. Among other things he was quoted as saying, "Indoor tanning in Scandinavia is not regulated like it is [in the US]."

And yet, and yet, there's SAD -- seasonal affective disorder -- where we get depressed from lack of sunlight. What's a girl to do? Consult your health care professionals; check out the report -http://my.webmd.com/content/article/75/89782.htm ; use your EQ (common sense). Most things are best done in moderation; some things are best avoided.

BTW, red-heads are 4x more likely to get melanoma than women with brown or black hair; and blonds are 2x as likely.

And, if you think you can sneak it in because you're young, think again. Women who used sun lamps in their 20s had a 150% higher risk later on.
