WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HAVE LIKE THIS?

My friend who's mother paniced in a railroad station when taking her and her 3 siblings on a trip, associates travel with the fear she felt as a 10 year old, watching her mother scream and fall apart. She understands this rationally, but she remembers it very strongly emotionally. Emotions, being more crucial to our survival, will prevail.

What can be done? Many things. NLP techniques, for one thing, to change the mind-picture, or change the ending. Learning stress-management and relaxation techniques for when she travels. Working on changing her self-talk. Various forms of coaching.

Each time she has traveled with that same low-level anxiety, she has reinforced the original situation, reinforced the bonds.

The neurons in the brain form connections, and hers is very wired to travel => panic. Those connections need to be broken, re-wired so to speak, which is limbic learning and which takes time and coaching supervision.

Lucha says she hates to learn. And what does she do the minute she gets home from school? She picks up a book and starts reading, or works in her "Highlites" magazine, or gets on the Internet to learn about flowers, or asks her grandmother a million questions about cooking.

Lucha actually loves to learn, it's learning associated with school she hates. Why? She got in trouble all the time in first grade, with a teacher who didn't like active, noisy kids. And then she got in trouble when she got home, with parents who expected straight As and yelled at her at homework-time.

Lucha loves to learn but she has very negative emotions about learning associated with school. Anything like that happen to you?

What have you over-learned?

Malar says she will never marry again, will never date a man, never wants one in her life again. She lived with an abusive husband and has very negative emotions associated with the experience which she has generalized to all men, and to marriage.

Malar is like the child who's been bitten by a dog and is convinced that all dogs bite. The trick is to get the child to get close enough to a non-biting dog to find out that "all dogs don't bite."

Think about the emotions associated with things you do, and where and how you learned them. It might be you could benefit by loosening some connections!
