We share the limbic brain with all mammals. The limbic brain is specifically designed to detect and analyze the internal state of other mammals.
How does this work? The Plexiglas experiment is a good example, or the "visual cliff" as its called. Researchers placed a Plexiglas shield across a cabinet and set a baby crawling across. When he comes to the "visual edge" he is confused, feeling solidity beneath him but seeing a drop, so he turns to his mother to find out what to do and how to feel about it. If he sees reassurance, he goes forward. If he sees fear, he stops. All without words.
"Emotionality," says Dr. Richard Lewis, "enables a mammal to sense the inner states and the motive of the mammals around him. We can detect the emotional state of another person and adjust our physiology to match the situation -- and the other person can do this in return." This is when we're in synch with someone, or attuned.
When we meet the gaze of another," he continues, "two nervous systems achieve a palpable and intimate apposition. Eye contact," he says, "is not a metaphor!
We've very attuned to this resonance, so when it isn't there - for instance when we "gaze" into the eyes of a turtle or a snake -- it's a peculiar feeling. As one of my seminar participants said -- nobody's home!
Some of us are more 'permeable' in this way to receiving the limbic states of others, but we all can and do. And so do the mammals we live with! If you've ever watched a bunch of horses standing in a corral take off when one of them gets nervous, or watched panic spread through an office when the boss is firing someone, you understand that "emotions are contagious."
And emotions are an integral part of everything we learn.
I love to clean house. How can someone possibly love to clean house? Because they lived with someone who did. I spent my summers with my mother's mother, Nana. She was a strong, vigorous, energetic women who loved to work around the house. I could feel it. I could hear her feet hit the floor in the morning. I remember watching her wring out clothes to put on the clothesline with her big strong hands and a twinkle in her eye.
When I'm down or bored, I pick up a broom and go sweep the porch as she used to do.
