Gifts for the Automotive Enthusiast

Christmas is here again and time for the questions: "What do you want for Christmas?" Or "I wonder what Uncle Ned would like this year?" If someone you are buying for is an automotive enthusiast or just someone who likes to tinker with mechanical "stuff", here's how to figure out just what they want this year!

1. Ask them what they are working on. Listen to their answers and chances are they will tell you what they want or need for the job!

You may have to glean the answer from comments like, "I'm having problems getting the axle bearing out of this old Case tractor" or "getting the dent out of this door is a real pain." They are letting you know they need some specialty tools. Or maybe they just need additional shop tools or equipment.

2. Ask them what they would like to work on this year. Are they planning a shop building project for next summer? Or would the feminine members of the family like new furniture instead of a paint booth in the garage (How could they be so short-sighted!)?

If that's the case, how about giving him the idea of making a coffee table from one of the old engine blocks he has in the storage shed behind the garage? An engine coffee table? Sounds like a perfect solution for any guy -- she gets her furniture and he gets a chromed-up engine in the middle of the living room floor!

3. Ask them what their favorite online stores are. Chances are they visit Eastwood Company or Northern Tool and Equipment. You can probably find everything you have heard about at their website.

Both these companies have large selections of hand tools and shop equipment as well as specialty tools for any automotive or mechanical enthusiast such as air conditioning tools, small engines, metal working tools and many related items that are hard, if not impossible to find at the local department store.

4. If there are big ticket projects in his future, give him gift certificates for items for the new "playhouse" (shop), some tools, accessories, or perhaps some storage components like metal shelving or even a portable storage building.

Gifts are always appreciated, but those that are used for many years bring fond memories of that Christmas day when they were received. A functional gift shows the love and consideration of the giver to the receiver. Now if I can just get my wife to ask me about that new three car garage and shop I want for Christmas!
