How to Beat the Christmas Overwhelm

Is it all getting you down along about now? So much to do and there isn't enough time or money, and your energy is running out and your enthusiasm is flagging. Here are some tips:

1. There is enough money, there is enough time, there is enough energy and there is enough enthusiasm; it's all up to you to put it there or to change your expectations. You can do it. Claim your Personal Power, an Emotional Intelligence competency.

2. "You control Christmas or it controls you."

3. If you are a perfectionist, you'll be hitting the wall along about now.

Signs are migraines, stomach aches, inability to sleep, lashing out, inability to focus. Pay attention to the signals and start learning not to be a perfectionist. (Work with a coach.)

4. Practice optimism.

The essence of optimism is not the expecting things to go well, but being able to avoid the downward spiral when things go wrong, or not the way you want them to. (Take the Optimism Course for more instruction or work with an EQ coach.)

5. Keep in mind what there is to "look forward to," i.e., why are you doing this? What's the purpose? Makes these your affirmations for the season. What does Christmas mean to you and your family?

• A tradition that bonds your family.
• You remember your childhood Christmases, you want your kids to remember theirs.
• A time to focus on love and sharing; that's what these gifts are all about
• Teaching the meaning of giving
• Jesus is the Reason for the Season
• It all feels so good
• All of the above

6. Repeat these affirmations when needed.

Take a deep breath during the "overwhelm" and the chaos and say, "This is to teach my children the meaning of giving."

7. Put them into practice. Use our EQ acronym for F-E-E-L. Our feelings connect us to ourselves, to the moment, to the experience, and to others. If you aren't feeling it, it isn't happening, and you'll lose your center.

8. How to F-E-E-L

• F-EEL. Feel it fully in the moment.
• E-MOTE. Express your emotions, appropriately.
• E-NTHUSE. Experience your feelings fully, the negative ones as well as the positive, and be inspired. "Enthuse" comes from the Greek and means having "spirit" or "god."
• L-ET GO. Experience your feelings, then let them go. Release bad feelings as well as good, making room for the next ones, so you don't miss the next moment.

9. Practice on the Cardamom Bread.

When you're making the Cardamom Bread, feel the dough as you knead, smell the cardamom, best smell in the world, look at the glisten as the dough rises, enjoy the odor wafting through the house as it bakes. Enjoy it for the magnificent sensory experience it is and focus on the here-and-now, not the trip to the mall.

10. Enjoy the journey!

Christmas is a process, not a destination. Make sure you enjoy the trip. F-E-E-L.
