Music To Our Ears

So, if you are with someone who has lost a child, say the child's name. It is music to our ears. We're reluctant to bring it up ourselves, lest we cause sadness, or lest it appear we aren't enjoying the company we're with, but how we love to hear his or her name, and you can trust they are always in our hearts and on our minds.

Yes, They Are Present

Recently I was on jury duty and when we were being queried, one woman was asked, "How many children do you have and how old are they?" "Three," she replied, her eyes tearing up. "I have two sons, one is 32, and one is 30. And I have a daughter. She would've been 26 this year."

One man I talked with who'd lost his son said, "I'm having trouble with my tenses." If you've lost a child, you know what he's talking about, and you know about the "dreaded" question.

If you're trying to be with a parent who's lost a child, please note question #4 -- not a single parent could say "I do not include my child who passed away."

Sharing Memories

And please note that what brought the most comfort to grieving parents (last question) was "sharing memories of him or her with others."

Again, won't you please speak his or her name?

The Poll

Here are the results of the poll from ALNF, http://home.insightbb.com/~alnf/. 94% who responded were mothers; only 2% fathers. We do not know how new the grief is.

1. Do you feel like you will ever be able to live a happy life again?

a. No, never. (11%)
b. Not happy, but I will be able to cope. (45%)
c. Yes, but not for a long while. (23%)
d. Yes. (20%)

2. How does the loss of your child compare to other losses in your life?

a. There is NO comparison. The loss of my child is definitely the worst ever. (92%)
b. To lose anyone I love hurts. (8%)

3. Do you believe your child sends you signs from heaven saying that he or she is with you?

a. Yes, I get signs from my child all the time. (23%)
b. Yes, but not often and I wish I would get more. (43%)
c. I have not been sent any signs yet! I know they will come! (27%)
d. No, I do not believe this (7%)
