Setting Goals

Tap the Power of Your Mind
What if progressing toward your most monumental goals was as simple as acting like you'd already achieved them? Experts say it can be that simple. A single positive statement, repeated throughout the day, taps the power of your subconscious mind and energizes your spirit while propelling you toward your goals.

Affirmations - Do They Really Work?
Two years ago you couldn't get me to do affirmations to save my soul. The irony is; now I do them all the time to save my soul! And guess what? They do work and, when done purposefully - with heart and consistency, they do wonders.
When I was first introduced to the concept of affirmations I found I couldn't get past having to say something that I knew in my heart wasn't true, much less having to repeat it. I felt like I was lying. To me affirmations ranked right up there with platitudes. "Don't worry, be happy." Right. I'll get right on it.

Traits of Highly Successful People
That You Can Learn!
We have all read about people who are successful briefly. They win a gold medal, make a fortune, or star in one great movie... and then disappear. Or, there are those like Marilyn Monroe and Howard Hughes who achieve extraordinary success, at the cost of their own lives. These examples do not inspire me!
My focus and fascination is with people who seem to do well in many areas of life, and do it over and over through a lifetime. In entertainment, I think of Paul Newman and Bill Cosby. In business, I think of Ben and Jerry (the ice cream moguls), and a local hardware store owner who is famous for the money he's give to children's charities.

SMART Resolutions
It's that time of year again. Many of us will reflect on our lives and resolve that things will be different in the year ahead. Thousands of us impulsively make life-changing promises to eat less, exercise more, stop smoking, spend more time with our families, and get our finances into shape.
Goals we set at New Year's are similar to goals we might set at any other time of the year. If these goals are vague, unrealistic, or extreme, the odds of reaching them are low, no matter when we decide to work on them. There is a strategy for streamlining the goal-setting process to stack the odds in your favor.

New Year's Resolutions to Jump Start Your Career
Resolve that, this year, you are going to find work that you love. If you've found it already, congratulations -- you have a great foundation to build on! If you love what you're doing, you'll put your heart and soul into it and be successful. Is this you? If not, resolve to change matters.
Actually it's SEMI-parasitic, attaching its roots into the host plant to extract nutrients, and it's especially magical if this "host plant" should be an oak. Mistletoe attached to an oak was sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids.

Always Do the Hardest Thing First
When you procrastinate, you lose. You lose time, energy, self-esteem, goodwill, trust, and timely solutions. Because my mom held firm, I learned that it was best to go ahead and get it over with. Of course you do that a few times and the relief you get will be its own motivation. Instead of that "little" nagging feeling that saps your energy more than you know, you're free to fly!
If someone keeps coming along behind you (or if you're doing this for your child, or report, or partner), the lesson will not be learned. You'll be reinforcing the whining and procrastinating.

Let's Get Packing!
Okay! By now everyone should have all of their moving supplies ready and their packing schedule done. (Yeah, right!) During all this packing there are a few other things that need to be taken care of. Most of these are common sense, but there are actually quite a few I ran across that I hadn't thought of before.
Below, I have another schedule of sorts (I'm really getting into this planning thing!) I have listed a time frame in which to do things, but of course you can change it around to fit your needs.

7 Steps to Make It Happen
Identify it. The southern expression for that is "Name it and Claim it". What do you really want? Be specific. Not, "I want a job that will pay my bills". Instead -- "I want to work as a Store Manager making $XXX per month."
Also try to look past the obvious goal, and connect to the feeling you are really looking for. "I want to be able to feel safe with my money, not just each month but for the future." Sometimes you can let go of a specific goal and find another way to get the same feeling.

Recognize that each small step is a personal success and deserves to be celebrated. For every victory give yourself a reward -- a bubble bath, an afternoon nap, a long walk in the park, coffee with a friend. And maybe, just maybe, you'll discover that letting go is really all about giving yourself the freedom to truly take care of yourself and trusting that somehow the universe will provide what you need when you need it.

Getting Unstuck From Procrastination
Sherry was behind on many important things in her life. She had unpaid traffic tickets, the insurance on her car had lapsed, she had a stack of unpaid bills, and her apartment was a mess. Sherry was not happy with this situation, yet seemed unable to do anything about it. Even when she set aside the time to get these things done, something always got in the way.

Play Small Or Live Out Loud
The famous poem by Marianne Williamson makes me think about how often we bury our aspirations under a bushel of self-doubt, insecurity, fear and procrastination. When we shrink, minimize and deny our strengths, talents and God given abilities, we shortchange ourselves and the world.
All of us are meant to shine our lights into the world in our own unique and magnificent way. It may be pursuing a long held dream, making significant life changes to live your best life now. It may involve taking a risk to achieve a goal. No matter what your dream is, just know that it is YOUR dream and you are the only one who can bring it to fruition.

Develop Clean-house Habits
A messy house can be overwhelming, and the habits required not only to get it cleaned but to keep it that way can seem like too much to tackle. But here's the key: I've found that it's best to use small steps in getting where you want to go. Try these habits for at least two weeks each before going onto the next.

Is This Your Year?
I'm going to resist the temptation to jump on the New Years resolution bandwagon. Frankly, I don't believe resolutions endure and I'd venture a guess you are saturated with messages, to tempt you to make the changes you want to make for this coming year. Instead of dangling a stale carrot in front of you, making it sound easy to succeed by resolution, I'm going to offer you something juicy. Forget resolutions. This year, LEARN to change your life.

Achieving Any Goal
We all have goals that are important to us. They range from quitting smoking, to creating our own businesses, to raising great kids. Unfortunately, most of us also have the experience of being unable to reach our goals, of having them always seem just out of reach. We can see them. We want to complete them, but we never quite cross that finish line.

Reach Your Goals Quickly
We all have dreams and goals. Some of them are simply "wishes", like winning the lottery or sailing to Tahiti. But we also have goals that are vital to our futures and the well-being of our families. And yet many of us make little or no progress toward achieving our most important goals. We wait and hope, but get no closer to our dreams.

Avoid a Life of Regrets With Your Yes List
How many times have you told yourself "yes!" today? Not enough I bet. Yes is the most powerful word in the English language. Unfortunately, too many times we say yes to others when we should say no. At the same time we continue to tell ourselves no when we need to say yes. You deserve to create the life of your dreams. Period. The first step on that road is to learn to tell yourself yes before you say yes to others.

Are You David or Goliath?
Being a success in business or in any aspect of life is not necessarily about doing a bunch of things to get there. What you attract in life is a mirror of who you really are.
One of my motivational "pep talks" I give to my young ball players is about the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was the giant, bigger and stronger than anyone else, and of course he knew it. His physical size gave him an absolute advantage over every one of his opponents and each opponent he faced could only look up and see the tremendous physical size of Goliath. There were tens of thousands of warriors in the Israelite army, yet every single one who went out to the challenge given by the giant Goliath, never came back alive.

It's Your Dream
Are You Using The One-Two Punch?
Have you ever noticed? There are some people who seem to know exactly what they want and how to get it. They move toward their targets with precision, and appear to achieve easily without goals or planning. They have a narrowed focus and motivation, reasons for doing what they do. They don't even have a set of written goals, yet they move through life attaining what they go after.
Then, there are some of us that need the strategies, the written goals and plans of action, and great role models to follow. Neither is good or bad, right or wrong. There are just different needs for different people. This article is for those of us who need the latter.

Thousands of folks every day feel trapped in a nowhere life. They feel like their life is being wasted, like they are going nowhere, on a nowhere island with little hope of escape. Every day these people trudge off to a boring and hopeless job that offers only an existence but no real sense of satisfaction in life. These people know there is a better life out there, a life they so desire, yet it seems so far away. They are trapped on their own island of despair.

A New Approach to New Year's Resolutions
The New Year is traditionally a time to reflect on where we are in our lives and to think about improvements that we'd like to make. It seems obvious that the first step in choosing appropriate New Year's Resolutions should be to define specific goals for what we want to achieve in the coming year. I'm a huge fan of goal setting, but I'm no longer convinced it's the best way to approach this whole resolution thing.

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth: The Surprising, Unbiased Truth About What You Should Eat and Why
By
Jonny Bowden
Especially around the first of every year, people talk about "eating healthier." It often comes tied to talk about losing weight, working out, getting fit ... the kinds of things that go on New Year's Resolution lists every year -- and last a few weeks before being dumped again in favor of one's old habits -- which presumably were unhealthy and needed to change.
But old habits die hard ... and usually the desire to change isn't nearly as strong and stubborn as the routines and preferences it's up against.
The fact is, if you want something badly enough, you'll do it. And if you're reading this essay, somewhere, somehow, something in side you wants a healthier diet. You'd just like it to be easy -- so you stand a fighting chance at making it happen without the pain, misery, sense of deprivation and inconvenience which teams up with the power of your old habits and forms an unbeatable alliance.

What Are You Planning to Achieve
by The End of The Year?
Fast forward yourself to the end of December and as the year closes, how are you feeling about your achievements during this past year? Really get in touch with your feelings, live them, breathe them and don't let them pass by.
Are you feeling any disappointment, regret or frustration for the things you haven't done or achieved? Do you find yourself thinking, "This past year has flown by and what have I done", "There is so much more that I wanted to do" or "Why haven't I done the things that I'd said I'd do".

What's On Your Personal Priority List?
What are the three top priorities in your life? The absolute three most important things that you consider the essential business of your life? Ok ... what are the TEN top priorities in your life? Which question do you have the most trouble with? Coming up with ten ... or narrowing things down to only three? Both lists are important, because of course the top three -- will certainly be included on your top ten. But from time to time the top three will change. In fact, from time to time BOTH lists will change. Items get dropped. Items get added. Opportunities -- or crises -- arise ... and things in your world shift to accommodate these.
Dreams change their focus. Goals are achieved -- or abandoned, and become "former goals." Relationships strengthen ... and dissolve. Births and deaths occur. Life is a kaleidoscope -- always intricate and multi-faceted, always in motion, some moments breathtakingly lovely ... others not so much. Yet through it all a set of underlying values guides us ... and helps us make choices. Small choices ... huge decisions. Routine maintenance ... and life-altering alternatives.

I once heard it said that you can't get anything done in a world without rules. While this is true in a broader sense, I like to say that an individual can't get anything done without setting their own rules.
Since rules need to be followed and discipline must be developed in order to follow the rules we set for ourselves, I equate this rule setting activity to the process of goal setting. A rule in its most basic form is actually a goal that we strive to achieve. We do not always follow the rules, even though that is the goal and this is evident by the number of penal institutions we have in North America and the number of otherwise good people who are incarcerated for petty crimes each year.

Goals
7 Easy Steps to Achieve Your Goals
We all have something in life that we want to achieve. But there is a difference between those who achieve their dreams and those who just keep on dreaming. The difference is setting a goal and making it happen. Just wanting something and dreaming about it is not enough. Everyone can dream. Not everyone can make their dream a reality.
We just saw Michael Phelps achieve his dream of winning 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. How did he do it? Well I can tell you he did more than just dream about it. He sat down with his coach and set goals. We heard him speak about a piece of paper that had his goals for the Beijing Olympics. He didn't tell us what they were, not even after the games were over. What he did say when asked what was on that sheet of paper "pretty much what you saw".

Why Goals Are Vital To Your Success
The art of goal-setting is correctly said to be the key to life-long success. At the same time, it is admitted that those who set goals often fail to follow through. Yes, they may be more likely to succeed than those who set no goals whatsoever. However, how can you learn to set goals and then follow through consistently to create the life you dream of?
First, be in no doubt about the critical importance of having goals, and preferably creating them in writing. What is a goal exactly? Tony Robbins defined a goal as a dream with a deadline. In other words, you define your dreams, and then come up with a time estimate of how long it will take for you to get there.

Begin Your Dream Project TODAY!
The biggest lesson of all is: Just DO it! Cut through the excuses and get started today. Half of finishing a project is just starting it in the first place. One of the main reasons people do not break out of their comfort zone, and commence making their dream come true, is lack of self-confidence. Too often, we are waiting for someone to descend from the sky and confer "expert" status upon us. We play down our strengths, compare ourselves to the elite in the field we wish to enter, judge ourselves unworthy, and decide that it is not even worth starting. It is better to do nothing.

Courage & Calling: Embracing Your God-Given Potential
By
Gordon T. Smith
Creating a dream-come-true life might sound like a fairy tale; however, it is possible if you go about it in the right way. It takes patience, determination, courage, and an extreme desire to succeed. If you really want to make life-altering changes, there are ten things you must do. Follow these suggestions, and you'll be well on your way to a total transformation.
1. Make yourself a priority in your own life.
If you aren't the star of your own life, then who is? Putting your needs on the backburner while you take care of everyone else is a surefire way to burn out fast. You can't transform your life if you don't make time for yourself, and you won't make time for yourself if you come last on your list. Decide now to treat yourself as well as, if not better than, you do others. Transformation takes time, effort, and the belief that you are worth it!

You Get to Want What You Want
"What's terrible is to pretend that the second-rate is first-rate. To pretend that you don't need love when you do; or you like your work when you know quite well you're capable of better."
~ Doris Lessing ~
When you tap into your inner voice and identify your vision, you bring to life your deepest longing. Your vision manifests the essence of you based on your truth, values, creativity, and authenticity. Putting yourself out into the world in this way can feel risky; the thought of that risk can easily block your from seeing your vision.

Signs Along the Road to Achievement
These basic precautions would keep us moving along safely, and help us arrive at our intended destinations on time. Remembering these simple golden rules of safe driving can also help with the achievement of other important objectives. Winners spend the majority of their time doing things that bring them closer to their goals. They stay on the intended path because their "hands are on the wheel." They make the most of each minute by staying engaged in actions of high priority. They accept help from others. However, they take ultimate responsibility for guiding themselves to their destination.

Avoid Goal Setting Pitfalls
In order to succeed with long term goal setting, then you need to be aware of the most common mistakes and pitfalls that can ruin your best-laid plans. Check your goals, and see where you may have hit a roadblock. It's easy to get plugged into a goal, and even though it's not working, you hang on to it out of sheer habit or willfulness. That sets you up for procrastination and frustration. Rethink the goal by concentrating on the big picture " the direction you want your life to go -- instead of the specific way to get there.

Goal Setting 101
To be a goal setter, and more importantly a goal achiever, you not only have to have a written set of goals for you life (business and/or personal), but, you also have to have a written plan of action towards their achievement. In a recent Success Atlas article I noted that I have an article on goal setting. The many requests I received for that article has prompted this more in-depth look at goal setting and achievement. In other words, you asked for it you got it, Goal setting 101.

Six Thoughts About When and Why Goals Can Limit You
When you focus primarily on your goals, you are not open to opportunities that may contribute to your broader purpose. Your strategy for reducing this limitation: Maintain a broad outlook on your life's "big picture." Open yourself up to all possibilities and talk yourself into the belief that nothing, nothing is outside of your reach.

Six Secrets To Ensure Success
If these six secrets ensure success and you know them, will you do what it takes to be successful? Years ago, when I owned a health retreat center, I would give seminars to large numbers of people. My assumption was that they wanted to be healthy. Some did. Some didn't. But, they all wanted to know how. How many success secrets do you already know? You likely do know how to be successful. You could give great advice to a friend, right? Now, are you following your own advice?

Where Greatness Begins!
When making a decision one should remember that it is your life, not anybody else's. So whatever decision you make should be based on what you think is the best decision, not on what others want. At the time the decision is taken it may not seem the right decision for others. In fact, the greatest success stories of our time were started by unpopular decisions. I know it is difficult when you look up from where you are right now to where these icons are. All you see is this big gap and you become discouraged. The key here is to set yourself short term goals that are within reach.
Where Greatness Begins!

What's on Your Shift List?
A Shift List is simply a list of activities and attitudes that have the power to shift you from feeling blue to feeling new. Your Shift List is any way you devise to remind yourself of the actions that have the power to transform your mood and put you back on a roll. Your reminders might be a formal written list or journal, a set of well-placed post-its or notes, pictures or photos, cartoons or symbols, poems or songs-or a phone or email "shift" partner. When your aliveness begins to fade, you can consult your "list" to trigger actions that will get you back on track and into the Zone!

Are You Going Where You Want to Go?
Certain goals have been the focus of your attention over the past 4 months, and you have conducted some 'experiments' with these goals. Before revising your action plans, you will want to know if your goals are still meaningful. By answering the following questions, you can refine, modify, add, or eliminate goals to renew your momentum and excitement about achievement.
Is each goal still important and meaningful to me? Why or why not? Does each goal align with my values? Am I excited about each goal? Are there any goals that I want to achieve primarily for someone else? Based on my results so far, how can I modify a goal to be more clear, specific, and achievable? Do I need to break a goal into smaller goals? Is there an area of my life or career that lacks meaningful goals? Using the answers to these questions, take the time to rewrite your goals in a way that is purposeful, useful, and visible to you on a daily basis.

The Action in Attraction
10 Things You Can Do Today
Successful people have taken the time to clearly define their life vision and are willing to take action on fulfilling it every day. Action leads to movement, which leads to momentum, which naturally draws more of the 'good stuff' to them. The desire to meet a challenge and succeed has been a part of many cultures throughout history. The ancient Peruvians used to draw out their goals in symbols and paint them in primitive colors on the walls of caves. Likewise, we moderns have an innate need to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. However few of us seem to be able to attract more of what we really want. Writing can help immensely.

Anger Means Your Power is On!
When you feel lost and confused, it is easy to give your power to anyone who appears on your doorstep -- a coach, a counselor, even a good friend or relative. People in transition, who are seeking direction, are especially vulnerable to anyone who offers help. The US government has developed programs to protect newly-bereaved citizens who are vulnerable to claims from funeral services. But if you have let your intuition lie dormant or you have responded passively to events around you, anger is a sign that you are getting your power back. You are turning on the juice. Your intuition is beginning to overpower the wet blankets, the poison darts, and the well-meaning-but-misguided mentors. Recognize, welcome and manage your anger. You are almost certainly ready to take action and experience your own power once again.

The "To Do" List vs. the "To Be" List
Try it in an area of your life where you're feeling frustration. Instead of obsessing on the myriad of details that you needed to get done yesterday, for example, spend a little time determining what kind of person you want to be. Now examine that 'myriad of details'. Are they moving you in the direction you want to go? When you see activities from this perspective, you will get more satisfaction from the mundane and your 'to do' list will gain clarity and meaning. Best of all, you'll be able to pare down your gargantuan 'do it today' list to a more manageable size: the items that most support your desired wish 'to be'.

Discovering What You Want For Your Life
I often recommend that life planning be based upon an individual's personal vision and purpose. If you are going to handcraft a life of choice, you'll need to know what you want so that you can make the choices that take you there. The trouble is that many (most?) of you cannot name what it is you want.
If you don't make choices for your life, others will. Often, choices are made by circumstances, weak foundation, past, parents. Choosing what you want in life and out of life is a new skill for many people. It may take some practice. At some point you realize that you are able to, and must, make choices for your life.
