Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder
By
Richard LouvHave you noticed that a warm, sunny day in early Spring can bring out droves of people? After a long winter there is a strong urge to get outside. We've been cooped up in our homes and offices for months, away from the sun and the outdoors.
This craving for the outdoors and nature is referred to as biophilia (love of living things). Scientists have theorized that humans have a biological need to bond with and be close to other living systems, including: animals, plants, habitats, objects in nature and even the weather.
The term Nature Deficit Disorder was first coined by author Richard Louv in his book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder. He refers to the biophilia theory and suggests that many of our children are suffering as a result of the disconnect from nature created by our modern lifestyles.

Why Can't I Lose Weight?
Do you keep trying to lose weight, but fail every single time? Have you tried every popular diet out there, but nothing works? Well, today you will find the answer! In this article, I will outline the most common reasons why you may be unable to lose weight:
"You have a slow metabolism": The term metabolism is a very complex concept and includes all the chemical reactions that occur in the human body. The body requires large amounts of energy every day in order to regulate temperature, repair internal damages and synthesize useful substances that will enable the various organs to function. In fact, the liver uses 27% of this energy, the heart only 10%, the brain 19% and the kidneys 7%. Also, a large amount of energy is spent as heat loss.
Your metabolism doesn't always remain constant and having an extremely low metabolism is impossible, because your organs always need energy in order to function. However, it may be true that you burn calories at a lower rate than you should.

Holiday Help For Emotional Eaters
Weight is just that, weight. It is an inadvertent way to keep you on the ground. You are grounded when you have clarity. You are in control, and your creative mind is working to its full potential. With grounding comes enhanced intuition, you may be surprised just what flows forth when you are secure in your own self-being. Grounding offers complete confidence in your abilities and who you are. It gives you the ability to STAY motivated.
The best way I describe not being grounded, in relation to food, are my bouts with binge eating and bulimia. I never focused on what I was eating. It was more about what I would eat next. One thing after another was consumed before I had time to even think about what I was swallowing. During those times, there never was an "Earth to Catherine" moment.

The "Sandwich Generation" is a term that has now made it into the dictionary. It fits an increasing number of Boomer women whose reality includes being squeezed between the demands of growing children and the needs of aging parents.
A study by AARP and the National Alliance for Care-giving identified over 44 million Americans who are caring for ill adult family members, 60% of them women. According to the National Center on Health Statistics, about 80% of women in their 40's have children for whom they are still somewhat responsible. Focus On The Joy
It's the Holiday Season -- A new year is just around the corner! I'll bet you're already thinking about how you'd like next year to be a little different than the last, right?
But instead of thinking of performance, and efficiency, and control, I'd like you to take this opportunity to think about how many things in your daily life that you do "just for the joy of it"?

Aromatherapy Begins at Home
Love a clean, fresh-smelling home, but you're wary of spraying chemical air fresheners all over the place ... and $$$ for those lovely aromatherapy candles-in-jars just aren't in the budget? Well, here are some ideas I came across from How Stuff Works. (One of the most interesting sites on the internet. No kidding, I could play here for hours!)
You know how great your house smells when there's a home-made apple pie baking in the oven? (Ok, maybe you'll need to think back to how great your grandmother's house smelled then!!) Or in the winter when there's spiced cider mulling in the kitchen? Well, it's the spices in those things that make the scent, and you can recreate that great fragrance any time you want by letting a collection of spices not-quite-simmer on the stove.

A Look at Alternative Medicine and Conventional Medicine
Alternative medicine and alternative therapies are therapeutic practices, which are currently not considered as an integral part of conventional medicine. Conventional medicine is the current mainstream medical system of diagnosis and treatment of disease.
However, an increasing desire for wellness, in response to today's stressful lifestyle and rising incidences of cancer, disease and illness, has led to the rising demand for alternative medicine and therapies. It is true that many people are becoming disenchanted with conventional medicine's drugs and the approach to healing.

Enjoy the Holidays!
5 Practices to Less Stress and More Joy
It bothers me that most conversations I have at this time of year contain some level of stress and anxiety about the upcoming holiday season. I'm not immune myself - every year I swing on a pendulum between being caught up in a frenzy of materialism or feeling the urge to back away and becoming cynical about the entire season. What is up with that? Shouldn't this time of year be about peace, joy and celebration?
It's understandably complex; the holiday season taps into all of our personal and collective beliefs and values, from our deepest feelings about creation to how our families function to how we live in community. Throw a substantial dose of shameless consumerism into the mix and it's no wonder people both love and dread December.

Be a Money Shaman
Native shamans teach, "Take care of yourself first, so that you can then take care of others." You've got to give yourself enough love, money and health, in order to have enough to share with others. You've got to be allowing love, abundance and vitality to be flowing into and through you, in order for it to be flowing out from you.

Turn Overwhelm Around With These 10 Tips
Overwhelm is one of the biggest challenges that entrepreneurs experience on a daily basis. The definition of overwhelm, according to The Brainy Dictionary is, "To cover over completely, as by a great wave; to overflow and bury beneath; to engulf; hence, figuratively, to immerse and bear down; to overpower; to crush; to bury; to oppress, etc., overpoweringly." Whew...sound familiar? I've been there, too, so I understand -it's not a fun place to be.

Emotional Sensitivity
Sensitivity is a set of character traits that has just begun receiving attention from the psychological community within the past few years. This is strange because it has always been fairly prevalent among the population. Nevertheless, it has not even been officially recognized as a personality type. I want to make sure that you understand what I mean when I use the term sensitivity. Following is a list that describes the attributes of emotionally sensitive people.

Are You Being Stalked?
This is not just a question reserved for the rich and famous. Stalking is not a behavior defined with logic or reason. Millions of people have been stalked through time and history. Stalking is typically defined as three instances of contact after you have asked the individual to refrain from contact. This can be seeing them in public, a telephone call, or an email.
Stallkng does not come in one form or one type of activity. Is there someone who you bump into in public a little too often? Does this go a little beyond coincidence? Do you have telephone calls from the same person too often? Does this continue to be a daily problem even after you ask them to stop? Do your instincts tell you something is very wrong with this situation?

Battle With Burn-Out
Letting yourself reach the point where you are burnt out, worn down and used up is a threat to your dreams, goals and your life's happiness. The physical manifestation of burnout, or an overload of stress, is your body's natural response to the pressures you are placed under and that place it under during the course of your day. Worse yet when you place yourself in a stressful situation in your mind through worry and fret, your body reacts as if physically placed in that situation. Your body's natural defenses go into action.

The Sacred Heart of the World: Restoring Mystical Devotion to Our Spiritual Life
By
David Richo
We all need space, we all need time to ourselves. Indeed, one little corner, a fraction of time that you allow yourself can do wonders to your being, to get in touch with your inner self and give expression to your faith. A space that allows you to reflect on your life, on your day, on what tomorrow may bring. A small place where you can shed a tear, or breathe a sigh of relief, quieten a troubled mind or savor a few victories.
It is a place to reflect and contemplate on what is important to you, to allow you to connect with your inner self, without interference, and in solitude. It could be as simple as a table top, a corner of the bedroom, a place just for you to enjoy few precious moments alone.
No, it does not require a whole room, or many hours. Is there a small table top, a spot on the dresser, an isolated corner, an idle spot that collects clutter and dust? If you are on the road a lot, would you not want to carry something to evoke that feeling of connectedness?

Stress Management
Pressure-Proof Your Holidays
The holidays are fast approaching. Are you feeling stress and overwhelm, instead of joyful anticipation? With so many competing obligations and needs in our modern life, preparing for the holidays might feel like yet another daunting chore. I'll share 5 key strategies to help you pressure-proof your holidays, so you can enjoy instead of "endure" your holidays.
1. Focus on what's important
What does the holidays mean to you? Is it the special time with loved ones, gratitude, renewal, hope, cultural or family traditions, reconnecting with old friends, serving the community, religious meaning, etc.? Find out what's important to you, and set a clear intention to focus only on those things.

Be Good to Yourself While Grieving
Grief is exhausting. In some ways, it is like running a marathon. You have to be in good shape and stay that way. If you are going to be able to help others you need to be good to yourself. Though I have tried to do this I forget sometimes.
I keep working on self-care, however, and here are some of the ways I am good to myself while grieving for four loved ones.

Anticipatory Grief and Holidays
12 Survival Tips
Anticipatory grief - a feeling of loss before a death or dreaded event occurs - is a hard journey. Holidays make it even harder. At a time when you're supposed to feel happy and joyful, you feel sad and anxious. You're on pins and needles and wonder what will happen next.
Remember, your grief stems from love, and you may find comfort in that. Holidays don't erase your reasons for feeling sad and lonely, according to the National Mental Health Association, and "there is room for these feelings to be present." So accept your feelings and, if you feel like crying, go ahead and do it.

Taking Care of Number One
Ten Tips to Get Into the Self-Care Habit
Have you ever noticed that there is just never enough time? There is always another project, another "to-do", another responsibility to take care of. In this "fast" world of ours, the easy way out is to take on more and more responsibilities for others, at the expense of oneself.
Yet, your own body and soul needs care and feeding. Whether it is kicking the smoking habit, or eating better, or getting active again, or training for a specific event, or simply taking some "me time", once you learn to take care of yourself first, before everyone and everything, you will discover that you gain the energy to take care of everything else.

You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!: The Classic Self-Help Book for Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder
By
Kate Kelly, Peggy Ramundo
At first glance, it would seem that positive thinking and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have nothing to do with one another. But many of us with ADD develop negative thinking patterns because we become frustrated by our challenges and frequent feelings of being overwhelmed. This negative outlook then makes it even harder for us to manage those challenges and move forward.
Practicing positive thinking allows people with ADD to focus on our strengths and accomplishments, which increases happiness and motivation. This, in turn, allows us to spend more time making progress, and less time feeling down and stuck. The following tips provide practical suggestions that you can use to help you shift into more positive thinking patterns:

Love Your Self, Learn to Say No
No is a powerful word. I once took a street defense class with my daughter, Shelly. In simulated exercises, men in helmets and padded clothing approached us in menacing ways and we were taught how to protect ourselves. These simulations felt amazingly real! Saying "NO!" was always the first step. We learn to say no loudly and from a place of inner strength. There was something about the way we were taught to say no that seemed to increase our overall strength; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Are You Able To Say Both 'Yes!' And 'No!'?
When it is all said and done, when we delve deeply into our emotions, we almost always find that our strongest and most habitual response is covering up other feelings that we are not fully aware of. We feel hurt, disrespected, abandoned, or sad, and we cover over these feelings and lose touch with them, by expressing anger or resentment instead.
When we find ways to tap into our deeper emotions we invariably find that we have been neglecting some form of pain or discomfort. When we neglect or simply don't notice our deeper emotional reactions, we lose the ability to express our full range of emotions. In the process we find that by consistently expressing only one segment of our entire emotional range, we limit our ability to be happy and feel at ease within ourselves and with those that we interact with.
