Facing Fear

Help Your Kid Survive Mean Girls Or Guys
At some point in your school career, chances are you've had at least one run-in with a kid who seemed determined to make your life miserable. If your son or daughter is currently dealing with one (or more) of these kids here are some positive messages you can offer.
These aren't magic bullets by any means. But if you a) empathize with what your child is going through, b) make sure (s)he knows no one deserves bad treatment from anyone, and c) become your child's #1 advocate, then you will help the situation.

Be Open to Opportunities
Opportunities often come disguised in many different shapes and forms. Some are obvious, while others arrive disguised as hard work, difficulties or obstacles that arise throughout life.
Whenever, and wherever, there is a problem -- your own or someone else's -- there is also the seed of opportunity disguised within the problem. Do you see these as opportunities?

How to Manage a Transition Successfully
I work with clients in transition. Some of the transitions are chosen, such as retirement. Others are involuntary transitions such as losing a job or being forced to change careers because of a disability.
We all have a different "set point" for our ability to handle changes. It has to do with our natural temperaments, and also the way change and ambiguity were handled when we were children. Why "ambiguity?" Because more than anything else, transitions involve the unknown.

Best 8 Ways to Deal with Detractors
We have all had them as we set and go after our goals, no matter where we are or what our goals may be: naysayers, detractors, people who poke fun or get angry or tell us we can't do it. Detractors are very serious business, even if they just seem to be having a little fun at our expense. Don't let them stop you or even slow you down. How do you deal with detractors? Each one will be different, but here are a few tips:

The Way of Transition: Embracing Life's Most Difficult Moments
By
William Bridges
Life is a series of transitions - some huge, some small; some chosen by us, and others forced upon us. We experience transitions in all areas of our lives including career, family, beliefs, relationships, physical and emotional states, etc. The process of going through a life transition is stressful at best and may even be traumatic. The challenges of the process can be opportunities to learn and grow. The following tips can help you move through the transitions of your life with strength, confidence and success.
1. Realize that change is constant.
You have successfully completed many transitions in your life thus far. Remember what strategies worked for you and adapt them to your current situation. Make a list of past successes and how you achieved them. Consider which of these strategies can help you in your current situation.

Master The Art Of Being Rejected
How good are you at being rejected? The ability to handle rejection is one of the most important skills we can master in life. As you pursue your dreams, there will always be those who will tell you that you just aren't good enough. The road to the attainment of our goals is rarely rejection-free. Yet, when doors are slammed in our faces, many of us conclude we must be on the wrong track. It is amazing how willing we are to abandon our heartfelt dreams because someone else doesn't believe in us.
A close look at anyone who has achieved greatness will reveal there was plenty of rejection along the way. Take J.K. Rowling, for example. Every single publisher in Britain, and all but one in the U.S., rejected her first Harry Potter book. Many could offer her lots of reasons why the book would never sell.

Getting Your Power Back
During many years of observing others and myself searching for fulfillment, I've noticed an essential ingredient is often missing. I call this ingredient sovereignty, self-sufficiency or total independence from outside sources. Without this quality in its authentic form, no one I know has been able to achieve the happiness, health and peace they are seeking.
Throughout the years of assisting others and myself to feel truly joyous and free, I've watched people try to ignore, deny, invalidate or rationalize away the importance of sovereignty. I've witnessed friends and clients attempt to fake it, substitute for it, and try to steal and borrow it from others. All these efforts have been in vain. Their time, energy and intention would have been put to better use by focusing on allowing this quality to become a solid, personal reality.

Does Fear Control Your Future?
Does fear stop you from striving for something you dream of doing? For some people, fear paralyzes them into inaction and appears as real as their reflection in the mirror. I'm here to tell you that even that reflection isn't always reality. When I talk to clients for the first time who dream of starting their own business, the most prevailing emotion I hear, above that of hope, is fear. This is extremely common. When asked about their fears, they admit that they are afraid that they will fail, that people will laugh at them, that they will not be viewed as credible professionals worthy of attention. There is another fear that can pop up, addressed later.

Boosting Self-Confidence
When you put your focus on the daily improvement of your own skills and abilities you can and will grow very quickly. And your confidence will surge. Confidence without competence is a dangerous combination. Make it easy for yourself and only engage in self comparison when you are assessing your progress. By doing this you will make it easier to keep at it when the going gets tough and your competence will grow day by day.

Keep The Faith
Transform The Fear
To what extent does fear rule your life? In my coaching practice, fear often emerges when clients envision change and take steps to bring those changes into reality. Familiarity fosters comfort and safety; therefore, growth may be perceived as frightening. Recognizing some of the subtleties of fear takes a bit of detective work. Forms of fear include: procrastination, the need to be in control, anger (which can be a cover for other emotions such as helplessness or powerlessness), isolation, induced illness, rationalizing, and blaming. Getting under the reaction unveils the fear.
