Even a Tree Needs Love
Some of the most well-cared-for trees reside in Asian gardens. They take great pride in the care of their plants, and their trees are no exception. Some of their trees are even wrapped with bark and rope for insulation against the cold. To most of us here in the U.S. of A. this might seem a little extreme, but some tender, loving care for our established trees can go far to keep them healthy and strong for many years to come.

Zen Gardening ... Key Elements
There are two main elements to creating the perfect zen garden. Of which are rocks and sand. The rocks represent mountains and grounding, while the sand helps to represent flowing water. However, this sand shouldn't be just any ordinary beach or garden variety sand. Instead you should purchase enough crushed granite sand to fill your space. Whether it be outside or in. Of which can be found in three different shades white, gray, or beige.
You should try to avoid using light tinted granite sand in sunny areas, as it will produce glare and cut back on the zen-like feeling you wish to achieve. Instead use these lighter colors in shady areas or within your office or other indoor gardens. While you don't need a container for an out-door zen garden, you can find many different platforms for an office-sized zen garden. Whether it be online at websites such as this one, or at a local Feng Shui shop.

Raised Garden Beds
Quick Start
If you want to get a garden started easily, creating a raised garden is a great way to do it. By creating a raised garden, you avoid having to pull weeds, turn soil, or dig out a lot of rocks and debris before you plant your flowers or vegetables. You can just choose the location you want your garden to be, then lay down the bed retainer walls, and put in the dirt.
Raised garden beds are popular for a couple important reasons. The first reason is that you can start to grow seeds and small starter plants earlier in the growing season than with traditional gardens. This works because the raised garden becomes warm enough for growth before the ground does. The second important reason that raised gardens are popular is simply that they're easy!

Flowers That Bloom in the Night
Some flowers prefer to grow by the light of the moon. It sounds as if I am going to break into song but there are those flowers that look their best after the sun has gone down. Many of these nocturnal bloomers are tropical plants best suited to warm climates. You can choose to select hardy perennials or just grow the tropical specimens as summer annuals and then bring them indoors for the winter.

What Are Weeds?
We often think of weeds as isolated plants, but an 'underground view' shows that they're more like a tree on its side. The 'branches' are just the weed part that sticks up above ground. The 'trunk' is the web of material that connects them all. Getting one just disconnects that 'branch' from the 'trunk'. But the smaller they are the less time they've had to branch out. Getting one helps prevent their spread.

Going Bananas!
Bananas are called the "world's most perfect food" in a television commercial and that holds true for the garden as well. The primary reason for giving bananas such a distinction for the garden is the very high potassium content, even in the banana skins. The banana fruit itself is normally eaten but if a couple of bananas in the bunch get too ripe to eat, that squishy, brown fruit is potassium "gold" for the garden.

Growing 101 Herbs that Heal: Gardening Techniques, Recipes, and Remedies
By
Tammi Hartung
To grow herbs, all you need is a sunny area, fertile soil and a little of your time. If your soil is clay or sandy, you will need to add organic material such as compost or manure to get the best results. Once your herbs are planted, make sure they get at least an inch of water each week and keep the area weeded.
If you have added plenty of organic material to the soil prior to planting, you probably won't have to worry about feeding the plants for a while. All I do is work in a layer of compost around the plants each season and my herbs grow fine.

Growing Tropical Herbs
Lemon Grass
Lemon Grass is a very fragrant tropical herb. It has a rich lemony scent and is commonly used in cooking. Although you will have to over winter this herb indoors, it is definitely worth growing.
Although many of you will not consider Lemon Grass to be a tropical herb, it most certainly is. This plant is indigenous to India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, although it is grown worldwide. Not only does this herb have an ornamental value in the garden, it also has both medicinal and culinary value.

Luring Ladybugs Into Your Garden

Attracting Birds, Butterflies & Other Winged Wonders to Your Backyard
By
Kris Wetherbee Of all the insects in the garden, the ladybug is probably the most easily recognized. Ladybugs, also called lady beetles or ladybirds, are a gardener' s best friend. Not only do they feed on insect pests, especially aphids, but their bright coloring also brings cheer into the garden.
Attracting them into your garden requires some planning and but can help immensely with your pest control. However, if you just don't have the space to plant the types of plants that ladybugs like, releasing commercially bought ladybugs can help you clean up infested plants while you work to establish your own population.

Praying Mantis
Friend or Foe?
Not many gardeners come into contact with a praying mantis but few can deny that they've heard of the infamous way in which the insects mate. While the female can indeed feed on its mate's head during copulation, praying mantis also have other amazing features. The mantid is the only predator which is fast enough to catch mosquitoes and flies. It is also the only insect that can turn its head all the way around (180 degrees).
Praying mantis have voracious appetites and will eat a variety of insects including aphids, grasshoppers, fruit flies, house flies, moths and crickets. However, in addition to these insects, praying mantis will also eat beneficial insects like hover flies and lacewings. If you're a gardener who is contemplating using praying mantis for pest control, do keep this in mind.

Natural Controls for the Evil Weevil
The tell-tale signs are there: C- shaped notches in leaves; stunted growth; and even yellow, wilting leaves - a black vine weevil infestation! This insect infects over 200 plants but the most common include rhododendrons, azaleas and yew. There are few garden pests that are as difficult to get rid of as this weevil but by targeting the young and vulnerable larvae and using a few cultural practices, gardeners can get good control of this nuisance.
