Emphasis is put on other issues such as the sensitive patient's depression, anxiety, job stress, or marital difficulties. The therapist may turn the focus to assertiveness training or reducing self-defeating thoughts. These are all important issues, but when they are addressed outside of the context of the person's sensitivity, it doesn't do the patient much good in the long term.

Empathy, or psychic feeling, is the underlying cause of sensitivity. If a person has the traits of emotional sensitivity that indicates, without a doubt, that she has empathic ability. Sensitive people empathically experience the emotions of those around them. Sensitivity starts to make much more sense from this vantage point.

Sensitive people feel intense emotions, are aware of others' feelings, are deeply impacted by others' emotions, and can't shake off painful feelings because all these things are directly due to empathy.

Since our society does not teach us about empathic ability or even acknowledge that it exists, sensitive people have no way to understand or process the emotions they empathically sense from others. They have no means to control or manage their empathic ability.

The painful, empathic emotions build up over time, and manifest as some of the less desirable traits of sensitivity, which are being easily hurt, not being able to shake off emotions, fear of conflict, suffering from depression, or anxiety, and lastly, feeling stimulus overload in crowded or loud places.

This last experience appears to directly relate to the hyper-aroused nervous system. Sensitive people's nervous systems are aroused because their empathic ability is out of whack. They are being bombarded by too many empathic feelings too often. The nervous system does what it can to register and process all the emotional input, but it can't keep up. Hence, sensitive people's nervous systems are stressed and agitated by too much to do.

Since sensitive, empathic people are constantly feeling other people's emotions, it's no wonder that they feel overloaded with emotions. They are experiencing more emotions than any one person should. These folks can intimately sense within themselves the emotional energies in the environment around them. This is why they become overwhelmed in crowded, busy places.

While interviewing empathic people, I found it interesting that many of them used the same words to describe their experiences. They said they felt like "an emotional sponge." They used this term to explain that they felt like they soaked up emotions from the crowd around them. The problem was when they got home, they didn't know how to wring themselves out.
