I want to make it clear that there are a few traits of sensitivity that do not relate to being negatively overwhelmed by empathy. Sensitive people are emotional creatures. They are aware of their own emotions. They are also empathetic in the most basic sense of the word, being keenly aware of other's emotions. People feel understood around an empathic person.

Many sensitive people gravitate toward the helping and healing professions because they naturally understand other's emotions. Lastly, sensitive people are great appreciators of art and often have artistic ability. Their empathic ability allows them to sense the depth and meaning of art. These traits of sensitivity are all highly desirable. What a cold, nasty world it would be without people to understand emotions, connect with other's emotions, and create and appreciate art.

These three desirable traits are the only true traits of sensitivity and empathic ability. The other less desirable traits of sensitivity (easily hurt and overwhelmed, a prevalence of negative emotions, depression and anxiety, and stimulus overload) are all signs of empathy gone wrong. They manifest only when empathy has been ignored and unmanaged.

The build up of painful empathic emotions over time causes these negative traits of sensitivity. They are not the natural, intended characteristics of sensitivity. This leads to an important point.

Once the sensitive person gains knowledge about empathy and learns how to release and heal his empathically sensed emotions, he no longer will experience the undesirable traits of sensitivity. All that will be left are the desirable ones. This is a radical idea. Although people don't understand sensitivity, they assume that it is not changeable. Common thought dictates that a sensitive person is forever sensitive, doomed to be hurt, overwhelmed, and overloaded her entire life. This is absolutely not true.

With information about the existence of empathy and healing of the years of empathic build up, a sensitive person will be rid of the negative traits of sensitivity, just like she has always wished she could be.

In summary, the positive traits of sensitivity are purely indicators of empathic ability. The undesirable characteristics of sensitivity, including recurrent depression, are caused by empathy gone awry due to lack of information and guidance. In our present day society, since so few people have any knowledge of empathy, most sensitive people suffer from the bad along with the good. They are not even aware of their empathic ability, much less have any idea how to control it.

While researching empathy, I found that emotional sensitivity was the psychological, observable manifestation of psychic feeling ability. When you get right down to it, the words empathy and sensitivity refer to the same thing. A sensitive person is empathic, and an empathic person is sensitive.
