How To Nourish The Sandwich That Is You
The "Sandwich Generation" is a term that has now made it into the dictionary. It fits an increasing number of Boomer women whose reality includes being squeezed between the demands of growing children and the needs of aging parents.
A study by AARP and the National Alliance for Care-giving identified over 44 million Americans who are caring for ill adult family members, 60% of them women. According to the National Center on Health Statistics, about 80% of women in their 40's have children for whom they are still somewhat responsible. Given these numbers, many of you may well be asking yourself, how can I balance caring for my parents, my children and myself? Here are some tips to help you sustain and nourish yourself.

Always Do the Hardest Thing First
When you procrastinate, you lose. You lose time, energy, self-esteem, goodwill, trust, and timely solutions. Because my mom held firm, I learned that it was best to go ahead and get it over with. Of course you do that a few times and the relief you get will be its own motivation. Instead of that "little" nagging feeling that saps your energy more than you know, you're free to fly!
If someone keeps coming along behind you (or if you're doing this for your child, or report, or partner), the lesson will not be learned. You'll be reinforcing the whining and procrastinating.

Don't Drive Yourself Crazy
My husband came home on this Friday evening after several hours of running errands and announced, "The crazies are out again today. I was delayed by three different accidents and twice someone nearly got me."
It's true, sadly. The last several years, I've noticed a very different atmosphere out on the road. I don't enjoy driving like I used to. It's no longer a chance for time to myself while listening to the radio -- something I rarely do otherwise. Nor is driving just a way to get the daily chores and commitments done.

How To Have A Hassle-Free Holiday Season
Do you know that some people actually relish the hustle and bustle, the crowded parking lots, and the singing Santas that comes with the holiday season? Mindful Driving
Is drive-time a hassle for you? Are you usually in a hurry, hustled along by the fear (or certain knowledge) that you're going to be late to wherever you're going ... and once again, a very public and essential-feeling part of your life is out of control. Surprising, isn't it how something so small, so simple, can leave you tied up in knots and wrung-out emotionally before you even start your day, get to work, or find a parking place to keep the appointment that is the great big deal in your world for whatever reason.

Let's Get Packing!
Okay! By now everyone should have all of their moving supplies ready and their packing schedule done. (Yeah, right!) During all this packing there are a few other things that need to be taken care of. Most of these are common sense, but there are actually quite a few I ran across that I hadn't thought of before.
Below, I have another schedule of sorts (I'm really getting into this planning thing!) I have listed a time frame in which to do things, but of course you can change it around to fit your needs.

Safety Net
I was working in the garden and kept hearing strange sounds. I looked to see if neighbors were watering their yards or spreading gravel, but I couldn't find where the sound was coming from or what it was. After a while, I noticed a large group of bees swarming my spruce tree. Looking closer, I realized I had an entire "swarming hive" attaching itself to the tree -- there were THOUSANDS of them. Now I had the answer to the sound question, but had a new question of what to do about them.

Develop Clean-house Habits
A messy house can be overwhelming, and the habits required not only to get it cleaned but to keep it that way can seem like too much to tackle. But here's the key: I've found that it's best to use small steps in getting where you want to go. Try these habits for at least two weeks each before going onto the next.

Out of Sight, Not Necessarily Out of Mind
When we talk about clutter, we are usually talking about the clutter that we can see: the piles of paper, the messy counter tops, clothes strewn on furniture. Very often, the way we deal with that clutter is to put it inside something: boxes, closets, and drawers. Or we move it to the far corners of our universe: the garage, the attic or the basement.

Personal Costs
How do you define your personal costs? Do you waste your precious time in a line only to save a $1.25? Well what if I told you that if you want to save that $1.25, you'll have to spend $125? Would you do it now? No! Well you better not! What advantage is there to spending $125 to save $1.25? None! So why do people do it?

'Anticipating' Your IRS Refund Can Cost You Plenty
While accountants are reaching for aspirin, millions of Americans are reaching for some fast cash this tax season. Unfortunately, those who reach for fast cash in the form of a "refund anticipation loan" are getting hit with interest rates and fees that are out of this world.

What To Pay When You Can't Pay Everything
With ever increasing consumer debt more of us are finding ourselves robbing Peter to pay Paul each month. We go through our bills and find that the money just won't stretch far enough to cover all of the bills and expenses. It's hard to decide who you should pay when you have one bill that is stamped with "Final Notice" and you are behind on several of your other bills.

Hantavirus
Just FYI
It was the Swine Flu of its day here in the American Southwest a number of years back ... a deadly respiratory ailment -- with initial symptoms that started out similar to the flu but which quickly progressed to a stage where the lungs of a victim filled with straw-colored fluid ... and from there often caused death.
It seemed to arrive out of nowhere and also seemed terrifyingly confined to this area of the country. New Mexico and the Four Corners region were Ground Zero with a major outbreak in 1993 ... and this state was swarming with CDC workers looking to isolate the cause and identify the transmission agents.

Deciding To Keep A Budget
Most of my 22 years in the 'work force' have been spent in this wonderful world of mortgages. But there was a period of time when my first daughter was 3, that I worked for a Financial Planning firm about 45 minutes from my home. What can I say? All the good jobs were not close by. By observing the financial planners in their meetings and through my own education in business and finance, I've come up with a few suggestions for people on how to manage money better.

Budget the Luxuries First!
Too many couples argue about money. ("But what else is important enough to argue over?" I hear you say!) Well, I've been in more than a few of those arguments myself over the years, and I'm not particularly proud of the fact. Especially as I'm an avid science-fiction buff, and my childhood hero-author Robert A. Heinlein penned a four word solution to this issue well before I got out of grade school: Budget the luxuries first!!

Procrastination Busters
1. Take time to plan -- at the end of each day, plan for the next.
Write a to-do list that not only includes the things that need to be done (deadline-oriented items) but also long-term projects that propel your strategic plan.

Zen Mind: How to Declutter
Recommended Book from Amazon

101 Feng Shui Tips for Your Home
By
Richard Webster
One of the things that gives me most peace is have a clean, simple home. When I wake up in the morning and walk out into a living room that has been decluttered, that has a minimalist look, and there isn't junk lying around, there is a calm and joy that enters my heart.
When, on the other hand, I walk out into a living room cluttered with toys and books and extra things all over the place, it is chaos and my mind is frenetic.
I've been a simplifier and a declutterer for years now (probably 8-9 years) and I've gotten pretty good at it, but I've found that you have to keep coming back to revisit your clutter every once in awhile.

Getting Things Done
Do you ever wonder how much time you spend thinking about things that need your attention? Then, shrug your shoulders and think some more about it later. In the meantime, nothing gets done. Sometimes the "things" that are put off will only take a few minutes to do; then it's out of the way.
Think of the supper dishes -- if everyone makes an effort to clear the table and get at the dishes, this will only take a few minutes. Think how pleasant it will be in the morning to face a clean and tidy kitchen. What a good way to start your day. You do not have to sort through a pile of dirty dishes for a cup, a plate or a teaspoon or whatever else.
