Retirement

Better Aging
My friend who retired last year from years on Wall Street tells me, "I have to watch very carefully how I spend my money. I don't know how to do anything."
One of the reasons people find retirement challenging, is also the solution to the problem of better aging: we identify with roles in our lives. Worse than that, we enjoy them. They're what our life is all about or we wouldn't have been doing them in the first place.
Now my friend certainly knows how to do things. He can cook his breakfast, he's an attentive father, he knows how to mow the lawn. But to his way of thinking, now that he's no longer a broker, he "doesn't know how to do anything."

Thinking About Moving to a Small Town?
Are you thinking about moving to a small town or to the country? I am. In doing some research, I discovered some assumptions worth checking out. Many people move happily to small towns and are pleased; others are surprised and unhappy. If you do the research, you can avoid being in the latter group! Use your EQ to feel out the situation and make a good decision.

How to Be So Successful
and Happy You Don't Want to Retire
Herb Kelleher was on my Southwest flight the other day from San Antonio to Dallas. Formerly the CEO of Southwest Airlines, he is now retired and Chairman of the Board. However, he doesn't know he's retired. We associate Southwest with "good feelings," and its success has everything to do with Herb and with emotional intelligence.

Reality-Check
Before You Retire to Your Dream Home
The house I was looking at was beautiful. It had everything I was looking for and I was telling the realtor about it when the deck shook beneath my feet and my words were drowned out by a 747 seemingly about to land on my head.
"You'll get used to the sound," the realtor went on, gamely. I didn't think so. A house in a flight path, I decided, was not the house for me.
Living on the North Shore of Chicago, I did get completely insensitive to the regularly passing elevated trains, but they weren't going right over the top of my house.
