Recession
9 Ways to Increase Your Value at Work
by James LeGrand

During this economic downturn, no one can presume their job is safe from a layoff. While thousands of layoffs have been occurring on an almost daily basis, there are others that may be able to dodge the bullet with some minor changes in how they view their job.

Here are 9 strategies to increase your value at work during a recession.

1. Be Known As a Problem Solver

Regardless of what job you have or what industry you are in, you are paid to solve problems. Think about the most valuable people at your company. They are more than likely the "go to" people when there is a major problem to be solved. They may not know all of the answers. However, they are confident in their ability to figure it out.

Become a problem solver and ensure that others know it. Find a niche that no one else is filling, and become the go to person for that type of problem. When you are asked a question that you do not know the answer to, clearly state that you'll follow up with an answer ASAP. As you receive thank you notes and emails from your customers, be sure to forward them on to your supervisor as an fyi.

2. "In-spect" What You "Ex-pect"

Limit mistakes by reviewing the work that you and your team are doing to be certain the results are meeting your expectations. Far too often, problems are found just as a deliverable is nearing completion, rather than earlier in the process when the direction of the work can be adjusted easily while still meeting the deadline. Also, team members may be saying that everything is fine when there is a potential risk that is quickly escalating into an issue.

Review your work or the work of your team against the expectations set by your management or by you. Check early. Check often. Check without guilt, as a higher quality end product will make everyone look good. Have quantifiable ways of validating that the work to be delivered is on time, within budget, and of the expected quality.

3. Be Likeable

Be the type of person that your management will want to keep around. If a choice needs to be made between 2 people to layoff that are equally qualified, the one that will retain their position will be the one that is easier to work with. Become known as Mr. or Ms. Positive. Be respectful to everyone from the janitor to the President.

Don't just identify the problems. Offer a variety of solutions to those problems and the pluses and minuses of each. Also, volunteer to lead the charge in executing the solution strategy that was selected. Say please and thank you. Remain calm, yet assertive in all situations and at all times. Be cordial. Make yourself available to help others that need it. Show integrity and pride in everything that you do.

4. Make Your Boss's Job Easier

Your supervisor will consider those that make his or her job easier the greatest assets. In addition to demonstrating yourself to be someone that does not require a lot of management, find ways to make your supervisor's job easier. When your boss asks you to provide something, take an educated guess as to what it will be used for and format it in such a way that it saves them a step.

If there is a recurring task that your supervisor does on a weekly or monthly basis, volunteer to take care of it for them. Provide your boss with information that should be shared with the entire organization as you hear it. Be the person your management can count on to make their day go just a little smoother.

5. Manage Perceptions

You may be doing all of the right things for all of the right people, but if your supervisor doesn't know about it, then in their mind, it never happened. You must get comfortable with telling your boss about what you've accomplished. It could be a favor you did for a co-worker, or the completion of an assignment your manager asked you to complete.

It could be the quick training session you give to a customer, or the suggestion you provide that fixes the problem. What ever it is that you do that adds value to your team, group, division or company, make sure your manager is aware of it. Never lie or stretch the truth about what you did or are doing. However, never let your good works go unnoticed.

6. Watch Your Back ... and Front

When people get desperate, they are capable of anything. During these bad economic times where people are out of work for months or more than a year, people are very scared. Regardless of how close you are with a work buddy, understand that if the choice is between you and them, they may choose the paycheck over your friendship. You have to watch your back.

Document everything as if it will appear on the front page of a major newspaper. Make sure all of your communications are clear, and ensure all instructions you give or receive come in the form of an email or some other written medium. Usually, what saves you during the blame game when something goes wrong is written proof that you were instructed to do something a certain way, or your statement that by doing something the way you were asked to do it, a problem would be created.

7. Under Commit and Over Deliver

It is better to commit to fewer things and deliver them all, then to commit to many things and deliver on some of them. Make sure you commit to what you know you can reasonably achieve with the time you have available to do so. Then, deliver in greater quality or quantity (or both) to surpass expectations. The superstar isn't always the one that delivers the most or the highest quality work. Sometimes, it's the person that sets expectations at one level and then completely surpasses them on a consistent basis. Manage expectations and deliver a superior product every time.

8. Demonstrate Higher Value

Engage in activities that set you apart from your co-workers without attacking or devaluing them. At your next department meeting, offer to give a presentation on a topic you feel passionate about that is relevant to your job. Most people are afraid to speak publicly, but those that do receive a lot of attention. Receive an industry certification that others do not have.

Pitch new efficiencies in your group's procedures that saves time and/or money. Stay current on the latest technological advances in your industry and be able to make suggestions by reading the top periodicals of your industry.

9. Write or Update Your Resume

There is something powerful about knowing your worth. When you write a strong resume, your confidence in your ability to command a higher salary in any economic situation goes up. You realize that you do have extremely marketable skills and that they cross over to other industries. The internet is full of sample resumes that are well written with formats that put your skills and accomplishments on a pedestal.

You may want to send out that resume to companies with open positions. The test of a strong resume is its ability to bring you calls to set up interviews. If you receive calls for more information about you or to set up an interview, then you know you have a strong resume. If you can't write one on your own, enlist the help of a friend with a strong resume or seek professional resume writing expertise.
