"Intuition is one of the most important abilities we can cultivate," says Jagdish Parikh. "It is becoming necessary for a comprehensive personal and global perspective."
Intuition has always been valued more in the Eastern philosophies and religions, with its emphasis on the right brain, but as the Information Age progresses, and the global world shrinks, it is finally making its way into the mainstream for the crucial lifeskill it is. Why?
We are so deluged with information, we can't possibly process it all. Linear, logical data-processing is a left brain activity, and it has its limits. If you've ever been responsible for making an important decision, you know there comes a point where the data runs out.
Yes, that's the place to have it, but what if it rains.What To Do?
No one can predict the weather.
How can I predict how much this benefit will make when this agency has never had one before?
We're compatible in some important ways, but not in others. How do I decide if this is the woman I want to marry?
This corporation has lost $6,000,000 this year. Do we fire the CEO?
In each of these cases, you're going to have to take a leap of faith. Call it intuition. You have to go over the data one more time, weighing the good and the bad - he's got an MBA from Harvard and turned around the last corporation, but the managers don't like him and neither do I -- and then decide what you're going to do.
If you think about it, in most cases you "knew" long ago and are just waiting to be able to rationalize it or justify it. Particularly if you must defend your decision to others.
Many of us who are intuition are relieved that at least occasionally now we can say, "How do I know? Intuition."
At the same time, the world is shrinking. Now we meet people from different cultures all the time, work with them daily, marry them, and do business with them. In a recent article on global greeting behavior, I discovered the following:
In Mexico, you'll be greeted with a soft handshake, an embrace, and a pat on your back, by a man who stand very close, touches your elbow and fingers your suit lapels.
In Senegal, on the coast of Africa, you're expected to greet every other member of the community before the start of a conversation.
In traditional Islamic culture, it is forbidden for an unrelated man to touch women, so a handshake is out of the question.
