Oh, the self talk. It's especially hard when we're depressed because it brings with it confusion, fatigue, negativity, and low mental energy. And the more you're used to relying on intellect to solve things, the more likely you are to be befuddled.

1. I'm not depressed. I'm angry and I have every right to be.

Corollaries:

• I'm just tired and there's a perfect explanation why.
• You'd be depressed too if this had happened to you.
• It runs in my family.
• I'm a guy. Guys don't get depressed.

2. There's no reason I should be unhappy.

Corollary:

I'm not going to be one of those [old men/jilted lovers/grieving widows/Goth teens/immature women/weak men/ungrateful people] that goes around depressed all the time.

3. Only *star-bellied sneeches* get depressed, and I'm not a *star-bellied sneech*, no siree, not me. Never have been, never will be.

4. I'm old. That's what happens when you get old.

Corollaries:

• I'm a teenager. All teenagers are depressed.
• I'm a middle-aged woman. All middle-aged women get depressed.
• I'm in middle-management. All middle managers are depressed.

5. If I just ignore it, it will go away.

6. Because the doctor will just tell me to get exercise, and I can't even get out of bed.

7. There's no treatment for depression. Belinda Lou Who tried everything and nothing worked.

8. You should be able to talk yourself out of a "bad mood." My partner says I should just "get over it" and he's right.

This is nonsense.

9. Well, right now cocaine/liquor/heroin/marijuana/coffee/cigarettes seem to be solving the problem.

10. It'll go away. My mother says it's "just" depression.
