Snuggle Up in a Cozy Mountain Lodge

In the classic movie On Golden Pond, the screened-in porch of Norman and Ethel Thayer's cozy summer hideaway was quintessential "camp style." The style is reminiscent of large northern hunting lodges or the "great camps" of the Adirondacks from the turn of the century, but condensed to cottage size.

Although camp style is best suited to a screened-in porch or low verandah, it can be used successfully in any outdoor space-or even in an indoor family room to provide a cozy hideaway from the winter weather.

To begin, think of your favorite ski lodge, or perhaps the summer camp in the mountains that you loved as a child. Rooms there no doubt emulated the outdoors with woody textures of twig and bark, and dark pine-forest colors.

Wood, Wood and More Wood

The ideal backdrop for this decorating look is a chinked log wall. But don't despair if your architecture doesn't include that-an inside or sheltered outside wall can be roughly panelled for a similar look. Free-standing knotty pine furnishings will also add that wood look to the space.

Your furniture should be rustic -- log, twig, bent-twig or even wicker. Painted or natural wooden Adirondack or Muskoka chairs are ideal. Painted wooden rockers also fit into this theme.

An old wooden bench can do duty as a coffee table or as extra seating. Folding campstools can also provide more chair space, or act as footstools. After all, the lodge look is rough and tumble -- so put your feet up informally.

Color and Fabric

The lodge look doesn't require a lot of fabric, but what there is should be in a deep-toned palette of forest greens, berry reds and bark brown. These colors in plaids or bold geometric prints reminiscent of Indian blankets are ideal. American Beaton camp blankets (most often cotton) are great for summer use, while soft woollen blankets such as Hudson Bay Company classics are more suitable for cooler weather.

If you require window coverings, consider using blanket lengths or even vintage tablecloths. You can also repeat the blanket fabric in decorative cushions, or introduce a quirky touch with embroidered satiny tourist pillows.

Motif

Perhaps the lodge you remember was a great spot for fishing. If so, include an old wicker fishing creel and some vintage poles in the décor. Add some fish prints or a mounted trophy.

Did you go canoeing? Full size canoe paddles against the wall, or a miniature birch bark canoe as a magazine holder would be a perfect way to remember that.

Was the resort "up north"? Vintage wooden snowshoes make a great wall hanging, and split wood pieces in an iron firewood basket form a lovely vignette.

If your favorite lodge was just a peaceful place in the woods, you might want to include some twig birdhouses, folk art, even some out-of-date magazines or a vintage sign from a motel, bungalow colony, or lodge. You can even carry off the proverbial mounted antlers in a lodge-look room. Or, if you can't go that far, try some antler-base table lamps.

It doesn't matter if you're on a mountainside or in the heart of the city, you can capture that great get-away feel in your outdoor space and create your own lodge retreat.
