Webster's defines lagniappe as "a small gift or present added to a purchase by a tradesman as a favor to customers." It is also often used colloquially as "a little something extra". In today's competitive world, that "little something extra", lagniappe, is every bit as important as dedication and persistence.
Aiming for success often carries with it a high cost to your physical self, your family, and your relationships. You could sacrifice all of these and still not get the promotion or the sought-after assignment. Life is subjective that way.
But there is a way to improve your odds. If you have a strong health, wealth, and relationship base to stand on " a strong "personal foundation" " then you are best able to fully use your resources and talents. A strong Personal Foundation is the lagniappe, "the little something extra", that will help you make decisions on what you desire, not what you're lacking. Without a strong Personal Foundation, you're standing in quicksand, always looking at your feet, constantly fighting to stay on top.
The 10 key elements to creating a solid foundation on which to build your life are:
1. Resolving anything in the past that affects your outlook in the present or future. Are you still tied to an "if only" idea? Do you find yourself wishing you had handled a situation differently? The past is still affecting you anytime it is "still on your mind". When you are able to resolve the past, you can reclaim that energy and let the present be your guide.
2. Keeping your actions in line with your basic beliefs; what's right for you. Do you always seem to be an example of "do as I say, not as I do"? Are you getting your energy from unhealthy sources instead of from living the life you love? A very large source of everyday stress is from not honoring the agreements we make with ourselves.
3. Setting up a structure of energy, love, friends, family that allows you to be your best. Do you find yourself running around trying to please others in an attempt to be liked? We all have very unique personal needs. If these needs are not met, you will spend a lot of time striving towards that goal instead of what's really important to you.
4. Drawing a line around you that permits only the behaviors of others which are acceptable to you, i.e. no hitting, no gossiping, etc. Do you often feel that people don't respect you? Do you feel unable to command this respect without losing your temper? A skill called ˜setting boundaries' can help you protect yourself from people who want you to give more than you want to or can afford to give them.
5. Living according to how you have chosen to behave. Have you found yourself in a situation of doing things that you just don't believe in? Standards are the behaviors and actions that you hold yourself to. You'll notice that your life works a lot better when you stop putting up with your own behavior.Page: 1 2
