6. Your eyes glaze over.

You can't see straight, you can't hear what's going on around you, you zone out. Nobody's home. Maybe you do an astral projection but unplanned. This is potentially dangerous because you leave yourself wide open. You are unshielded and could attract more harmful, inappropriate behaviors.

7. You start putting yourself down or lose your enthusiasm, instantly.

One minute you're on top of the world, bounding with energy and ideas, the next minute you rain on your own parade. How sad is that?!

In the words of Marianne Williamson: "Your playing small doesn't serve the world." So, notice when you do this. So, when this happens, quickly check who is around you (or who you are thinking about) and move away, long enough, to pull yourself together.

I personally like doing a quick Serenity Prayer* or calling a trusted friend to help me get a grip. *"God (or whatever you call your Higher Power), grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

8. You gossip.

You talk poorly about someone to someone else. Warranted or not, this is potentially defamation of character stuff and says very little about YOU! If you could badmouth this person, how could someone trust you not to do the same when they aren't present? Besides, you're giving your power away by doing this. Plug the power leak!

9. Your life story is attached to someone else.

You're a failure because "so and so did/didn't do this and that to me." A good friend once lovingly told me, "I've heard you say that before, Verena. Don't you think it's time to come up with your own story?" At first I was really shocked and angry at her for saying such a thing to me.

Upon reflection, and in time, I came to see what a gift that was for me to hear! I had a chance to disconnect from this story line I was hooked to and started opening myself up to exploring what MY story/life was REALLY about ... from this day forward! Thank you, Mimi!

Now, I draw from my life and share the learnings with other people, instead of blaming other people for my limited successes. What a gorgeous and freeing shift!

10. You are a victim of the "if onlys".

You find yourself saying things like "If only he/she would stop drinking/ drugging/ pill-popping/ over-under eating/ working too little-too much, etc." What you're really saying is :"If only they would do what I tell them. If only they knew I was God and I know what's best for everyone."

The harsh reality is that we can only be active in making our lives the best we can. It starts with developing an awareness around what we are doing that doesn't serve us well or the world at large.
