It's like this. Someone does or says something you don't like. And it's not the first time. Or the second time. Or the third time. You lost count (and you WERE counting) some time ago. Maybe they said something with a smile but you were left scratching your head, wondering if you heard what they said correctly.

You don't say anything in response. Why not? Maybe they meant well. You don't want to ruffle any feathers. But who are you hurting by not voicing your truth? What are the signals within YOU that could help YOU see that you're the one who could use a dose of honesty, courage, and self-expression, especially where feelings are concerned?

1. You lose your voice.

Truth be told, this DID really happen to me. I had my script (that I had worked out with my coach) all ready to read on a specific day to a close family member who I was finally read to confront. And then I lost my voice.

Maybe I had too much honesty to face and fear got the best of me. Message to me: talk it out some more with someone safe. Then try it again on another day. Do more self care activities, lots more, in the meantime.

2. You grimace, get a knot in your stomach, or hold your breath.

You know, the classic signs of "fight or flight". This sometimes happens to me when I just hear mention of someone that I have not really spoken my truth to, yet.

3. You avoid any and all contact with a particular person.

Now, if you have good reason to avoid someone that is openly offensive, destructive, or simply wicked, follow your instincts. I'm talking more about those times you go out of your way to not see someone because you have mixed emotions or just don't know how to handle your feelings or know how to deal with this person.

4. You find yourself plotting, spending sleepless nights, thinking how you're going to get back at someone.

Ever heard of the concept of "renting space in your head, rent-free"? When you devote countless hours thinking about someone's past or projected behavior towards you, you're probably not living in the present and neglecting your self care needs and other responsibilities. Is anyone really worth this?

5. You do harmful, unloving things to yourself.

"I'll show you, I'll hurt me." Wrong. You're only hurting yourself. There's danger here. Seek help! If you're in a 12 step program, it's time to start working your program more diligently. If you're not, maybe it's time to examine your behaviors, especially if they start becoming addictive-compulsive. If your life has become unmanageable because of someone else, you may have some unresolved codependency issues.
